someone on the earlier posts said gatka is the best form of martial arts in the world... WRONG. Its the best form of display martial arts in the world. I dont mean to offend neone but with gatka, u cant really defend urself properly. Gatka is too frilly. The real Sikh martial art is Shastar Vidhya - dont be illuded that gatka is the best coz ur setting urself up for a fall.

Hope no one gets offended by that but our Gurus survived through the art of shastar vidhya (Shastar = Weapons, Vidhya = knowledge) and with us being his Sikhs, we should also adopt the same training...!

I agree with Aman!!! Because who walks around with a 3 foot kirpan with them all the time, or with a soti, and they're very pointless in war like situations, modern shasters need to be adopted, like the instances in 1984, where modern shasters were used to defend the akaal takht.

Coming to the martial arts of the sikhs is shaster vidya, which is the science of weaponry, gatka is just a small part of shaster vidya, since this type of martial arts is such a broad category.

Grappling, hooking, some parts of ji-jitsu are also included in shaster vidya. So we should concentrate more on teaching the youth about shaster vidya, or else this precious piece of history will leave without a trace.
