I became Gursikh sikh recently and was hair cut before. As i am in foreign country , aand goras don't know much about turban so i usually wear parna all the time.

I don't know how to tie a turban. I tried to learn but i don't know i am not able to tie it properly.

I have only learnt how to tie a parna in few months.

Now i am going to india anow and i am afraid what should i do.

DO people usually wear turban all the time or can tie 2.5m parna as well.

I am going for 1 month. Is it ok to wear parna in public places in india.

I am afraid that people don't make fun of me there.

However there is shop i know there who take Rs40 to tie turban , i can do that while visit Ristedars or other main places.

ANy suggestions for me

Parna in India is considered informal (as far as Sikhs go, it is informal even outside India). So if you are going to be dressed for some occasion, a Turban is recommended. For informal times or sports stuff, a parna will do.

Also, while riding a two wheeler, a proper Turban or a helmet is necessary. A parna can earn you a ticket (chalaan).

Having said that, if you are not able to tie a proper full Turban, don't fee bad, a parna is fine for you. Instead of worrying about this, I would say go ahead and enjoy and learn while on the trip. Perhaps you can ask somebody over there to help you learn how to wear a Turban.

Have a nice trip and bring back tons of photos!

Its fine, I'm sure veerji that you could manage a simple gol dastar if u can do parna, once you have tied the parna (keski) just get more material longer in lenght (like to go around your head 5 times) and tie it exactly like you do the parna but cover your ears, although you can even tie a small parna if you want to go out, but as you are feeling nervous you can always wear a gol dastar then.

Here are videos to learn (all different styles):

and congratulations for becoming a Gursikh!

I have only learnt how to tie a parna in few months.

The proper way is to not look at a mirror when tieing the parna and the top knot should be at the center of head (dasam dwar) and not on the forehead like alot do in India.

It is recommended for Gursikhs to wear black, white, saffron and blue turban - basically saadhki colours.

SSA Brother ,

first of let me congratulate you for your commitment towards the faith and decision of your path.

Im frm Mumbai, India.

So just by any chance if you plan to spend ur days here, Il be more than happy to help you with turban tying. once I was terrible at it....but had decided to tie it...no matter what. Now am much better with experience and some help.

To answer your question, its not at all awkward to be tying a Parna or Patka for a sikh while visiting casual places or even travelling ,like general site seeing et all. Infact , people are quite used to seeing sikhs with varied turbans, so you hopefully will not be dealing with any hostility.(except some nut-cases which somehow a sikh finds everywhere in different avatars though;))

You can visit and gurudwara throughout India , and politely ask the gyaniji or sewadar to assist you with Turban tying(without any hesitation), and they will oblige.

Do let me know , if I can assist you in anyway in planning your trip or making it more worthwhile.

I can be reached at akashsachdev@hotmail.com

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Actually before becoming a Gursikh , i was like a Filmi Hero or Model with good personality.

My Father is not happy that i took Amrit.

I am not even married, so my parents are looking for a Gursikh girl.

Now as i can't tie a good turban i am not looking good.

My Father is saying you will not get good girl as you look bad now.

SO i am bit worried now , because no mater what every girl wants her husband handsome not with parna like me.

I don't know what will happen

So now your personality changed?

and about the "every girl wants her husband handsome not with parna like me" don't be so sure. Im pretty sure there are many girls out there who want a pure GurSikh boy.

Mine like cases are very less where ihave come at the point of mariage and i don't know how to tie Turban

Its ok veera with practice you will learn how to tie a proper Dastaar as well. You'll get used to it. I'm pretty sure you'll find someone to help you tie a Dastaar and slowly you can learn. Look up videos on the net or tell a Granthi Ji to help you learn. My younger brother wanted to tie a dastaar and our Granthi Ji helped him learn how to tie a Gol dastaar.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
