Has the venue for the lobby been confirmed?

Also can you provide more informaiton about the format of the lobby?

The lobby is inside the House of Parliament. It will start at 1.30pm in the Central Lobby between the House of Commons and Lords - where the presence of large numbers of Sikhs will send shock waves if we can get the numbers out and politicians know we are coming. SO far no politician has come forward to book one of the largest Committee Rooms in Portcullis House or the House itself from 3.00-4.30pm. We are waiting top hear from a number of MPs. This is the down side of losing politicans like Rob Marris.

HAVE YOU CONTACTED YOUR MP?

HAS YOUR LOCAL GURDWARA MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT:

I) THE NEED TO URGENTLY WRITE TO YOUR MP

II) TAKE PART IN THE MASS SIKH LOBBY ON WEDNESDAY 30 JUNE 2010 AT THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT BETWEEN 1.30-4.30PM

HAS YOUR LOCAL GURDWARA ARRANGED FOR TRANSPORT FOR THE LOBBY.

EACH TOWN SHOULD AIM TO BRING 25-30 THAT SHOULD BE ABLE TO COVER SEVERAL MPs

IT MAY BE APPROPRIATE TO ARRANGE A SMALL COACH AND/OR USE A COUPLE OF MINIBUSES

The Sikh Federation (UK) wrote to all 650 MPs over the last two days to alert them to the latest developments:

i) implementation of hand searches for passengers delayed at Heathrow from 1 July to 15 July

ii) growing unease of turban wearing Sikhs who work at certain airports e.g. Birmingham who are increasingly being subject to hand searches and the humiliation of having their turbans searched by hand

iii) Sikh lobby in Central Lobby between 1.30-3.00pm followed by a meeting in the Boothroyd Room in Portcullis House between 3.00-4.30pm

iv) MPs and Lords to join Sikh representatives to hand in a petition to 10 Downing Street at around 4.40pm

Some MPs from constituencies that have large numbers of Sikhs have said they have yet to be contacted by Sikh constituents other than by the Sikh Federation (UK). This highlights that many Sikhs leave it to others to contact MPs and sometimes this appears to result in no Sikhs from a particular constituency contacting their MP.

DO NOT LEAVE IT TO OTHERS, MAKE SURE YOUR MP RECEIVES AS MANY LETTERS AS POSSIBLE AND IS FORCED TO TAKE ACTION

i) MEETING YOU BETWEEN 1.30-3.00PM

ii) ATTENDING THE MEETING IN THE BOOTHROYD ROOM BETWEEN 3.00-4.30PM

iii) JOINING SIKH REPRESENTATIVES IN HANDING IN A PETITION TO 10 DOWNING STREET AT 4.40PM

IT IS VITAL YOU DO THIS AND WE DO NOT MAKE A HUGE EFFORT TO TURN UP FOR THE LOBBY IN PARLIAMENT AND FIND OUT YOUR MP IS BUSY AND UNABLE TO MEET YOU.

THIS IS LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE LARGEST SIKH LOBBIES EVER - THERE ARE EXPECTED TO BE SEVERAL HUNDRED SIKHS TAKING PART

What is the agenda for the meeting after the lobby, i.e. who will be speaking etc. What is the objective of this meeting

THE MEETING IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MPs TO ADDRESS SIKHS ON WHAT THEY ARE DOING ON THIS ISSUE.

WE ARE EXERTING PRESSURE TO TRY AND GET A GOVT MINISTER TO ATTEND AND RESPOND TO SIKHS AND OUR ELECTED REPS.

THEREFORE, MOST SPEAKERS WILL POLITICIANS. HOWEVER, SIKHS SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO ASK QUESTIONS AND MAKE SOME KEY POINTS.

Latest from Facebook below. Jagtar Singh - can you please confirm?

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

Over a period of 2-3 weeks Sikhs up and down the country have lobbied their MP to voice deep concerns on the proposed hand searches of the Dastaar at EU Airports.

The Sikh Federation contact over 650 MPs over a two day period to inform them of the Airport authorities interpretation of recent EU Regulation. This was in addition to sustained lobbying of senior Ministers and the high profile media campaign.

The result of this is that the Secretary of State for Transport has delayed the implementation of hand searching the Dastaar and the Department of Transport will work with Sikh organisations to arrive to a fairer outcome.

The lobby which was planned to take place tomorrow 30 June at 1pm is now postponed for the time being until the Department of Transport can offer a better alternative. If the right outcome is not reached we will put into motion preperation for another lobby date

We will keep you updated of progress, many thanks to those of you who contacted your MP.

The above posted by one of the Sikh Federation (UK) activists is a fair reflection of where we are.

The Sikh Federation (UK) received a letter from the Secretary of State at 5pm yesterday.

The following was immediately sent to the Sikh Channel to put on the scroll.

NEWS FLASH – Tomorrow’s mass Sikh Lobby of the UK Parliament postponed as Minister issues direction to UK airports instructing security staff not to touch the turban and only use hand held detectors. Wide consultation with Sikhs to start. U-turn by Department of Transport represents victory for all Sikhs that made the effort to write to and put pressure on MPs. Campaign for permanent solution across Europe continues.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
