I was wondering whether or not we as Sikhs believe that the old Biblical stories, which have evidence, are true or do we reject the existence of them?

For example:

Noah's Ark, the Commandments, Persecution of Jews, Great flood, Garden of Eden etc.

Ok Just because I am asking a question, does not mean I am not a part of "we". As Sikhs we are told to research other religions as well, but not abandon belief in Maharaj.

FYI I am a Sikh taking a Religion Class. We are learning about Mesopotamia and the bible and I was just wondering what the Sikhi perspective about it is.

I know there is a tuk by Bhagat Kabir Ji in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj:

baabaa aadham ko kishh nadhar dhikhaaee ||

oun bhee bhisath ghanaeree paaee ||2||

He bestowed His Grace on Adam, the father of mankind,

who then lived in paradise for a long time. ||2||

Ang 1161

Can Someone explain this tuk more? Did Adam and Eve really exist or is it just metaphorically written?

Forgive me for any mistakes.

I was just taking a kick out of the way the question was worded :( lol.

As for that, I think it's metaphorically written, but someone else can help as i'm not sure. Shouldn't it be adham, not Adam?

My take is that modern Christianity has diluted and morphed Jesus's simple message. It's more of a power hold on a group(s) of people than a path to God now...

What Sikhi has to say in my opinion is that religion can be a lifestyle and a guide that leads you to waheguru, god, allah, ram, or whatever you may like to the Supreme Being. However, with that said I'll still stick to what I say about modern Christianity.

He has 7,000 commanders, and hundreds of thousands of prophets; He is said to have 88,000,000 shaykhs, and 56,000,000 attendants. ||1||

I am meek and poor - what chance do I have of being heard there? His Court is so far away; only a rare few attain the Mansion of His Presence. ||1||Pause||

He has 33,000,000 play-houses. His beings wander insanely through 8.4 million incarnations. He bestowed His Grace on Adam, the father of mankind, who then lived in paradise for a long time. ||2||

Pale are the faces of those whose hearts are disturbed. They have forsaken their Bible, and practice Satanic evil. One who blames the world, and is angry with people, shall receive the fruits of his own actions. ||3||

I like this question - do we believe in christainity or reject it. In sikhism religions are viewed as different languages, expressing themselves in different ways to describe God. As languages vary there is no right language. Instead you are encouraged to follow the rules of your language(religion) properly which is why Sikhism says be a good muslim, be a good christain, be a good hindu etc.

You will be interested to know that there are references to not only Adam but to other things such as the mystical angel of death in Islam which not even muslims are sure about. There are also references to the Earth being supported by the mystical animal that Hindus believe in.

In all these cases when there are references to parts of another language (religon), sikhism is not accepting or rejecting it but it uses it to illustrate a concept.

A common mistake made by many people when they read SGGSJ is to try to gather factual knowledge. If you gather factual knowledge you will see many contradictions because sikhism refers to many different languages and religions but if you gather conceptual knowledge there are no contradictions.

This is important to understand as sikhism was created at a time when people of many different religions were combining to say religion is not important but the concepts that you apply are. So religion is not to teach you how the world was created, or how God works, or what will happen in the future. The aim is to understand concepts so that you understand that you are being conditioned in a certain way. Conditioning is a concept few people understand yet we are all conditioning ourselves. A simple way of explaining conditioning is the following experiment of dog food and bell.

I give dog food, dog has saliva

I ring bell and give dog food and dog has saliva

Eventually I can ring bell and dog has saliva when there is no food

In this example the dog has conditioned itself to interpret bell as food and have saliva when there is no food. As human beings we are also conditioning ourselves by thoughts (kaam, kridh, moh, lobh, haankar etc) into certain types of behaviour and some of them are correct behaviour and some of them even if we get an affect are not correct. So the purpose of religion is not an endpoint but it is a tool through which to condition yourself bringing yourself closer to the truth.

The purpose of the pannaa is to explain the greatness of God, you will find when reading SGGSJ the bani can be broadly classfied into conditioning concepts which we can apply to our life and the rest of bani explores the greatness of GOD.

This is quite deep but I hope it helps in understanding what we sould be taking away when reading bani in SGGSJ.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
