Sadh sangat ji, for gursikhs who follow the rule that they can't eat food made by non-amritdharis....I have a question - what do you eat then? Are the following things allowed:

-Bread

-Cheese/butter

-Chips, cookies, or any other such thing (cereal bars, etc.)

-Salad (that's been cut by a non-amritdhari)

-Canned food

-Yogurt, milk

I am sorry if this is a controversial topic, but I really need to know about this ASAP. I don't want to start arguments here, just want to know what you eat or don't eat. I am a moorakh, so please forgive my ignorance.

Bhul chuk maaf karna ji.

And what about saag.. as that comes from vegetables.. etc..

some cookies/cereal bars have eggs in them..

For keeping bibek, all depends on the person, most people who decide to keep bibek, eat food cooked by an amritdhari singh/singhni. They don't eat out (mcDonalds, Harveys, even if they are vegi burgers).

I second JKaur ji. Really want to know that. I know RehatNameh say that partly, but don't think every part is from there either.

And i am not starting a debate but like to know Sangat's views. The aata (wheat) we cook chapatis from is perhaps also from Non-Amritdhari farms. Do we have to plant the wheat ourselves, hence being farmers if the "best bibeek"? The fertilizers (khaad) used in agriculture are from non-amritdharis and often includes animal-excrete (in punjab..majaan deh gobaar), which is also related to non-veg food. Even in the most ecological agriculture it is impossible to create something (from it's true source) to before totaly free from non-amritdhari/maleechs' hands.

Second, the water we drink can never be 'not from a non-amritdharis hand', as it is always from fresh water sources where it is distilled probably by non-amritdharis, or in punjab from wells ect where the whole village have the same source of water.

Sangat ji i am not undermining the Rehat of Bibeek or neglecting it, but asking: where does the limit go...when is the food acceptable..in what way are wheat and beans non-veg (made up of animal-excrete plus solar energy and water, where numerous animals live)? Is the Rehat in the sence of 'we should not eat food from unhonest hands' or is it as Bibeeki (discriminative) as it sounds?

Bibek is just not about the food you cannot eat or who it's made by. It's also about the way the found is made.

Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh was known as bibeki because he only hungered or thirsted for naam. Siraff Naam.

Cheese, butter, bread, cookies, etc that are not made at home are just exceptions. At the end of the day, the less you eat from outside the more you can ensure you food is prepared in a Gursikh way, you are guarantee suchum and if it's bibek it will have the asSAR of naam..

The point is the food should be prepared by Amritdhaari's that keep their rehat and they should really be doing paath or simran. So when this food is consumed that person will also benefit from the naam and simran done by the singh/singhni that has prepared that meal. In turn that singh and singhni will also do naam. Naam is the essence of our lives and that is what we are here to do...

If the food is prepared gossiping about things than that is that asSAR that will be on the poeple that eat the food.

I hope this helps clarify things a little..

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
