Turban in theatre is not a problem. For the darhi, you can wear one of those all encompassing facial masks that othopods wear in theatre or simply use a standard mask. The kara can either be taped by the scrub nurse using micropore after you have scrubbed or removed and tucked into the turban - easily done at the side near the ear, or placed on a chain around the neck. During junior rotations in the West Mids, these issues were never a problem (large local Sikh population and hence religious familiarity). But in less privellaged parts of the UK (where Singhs are as rare as a blue moon) it is best to explain this to the scrub nurse and whichever consultant you are under.

I have a friend who is an ENT surgeon in Delhi and he always wears turban with nothing over top in surgeries. He puts the surgical mask over top. As long as the sterile field is not compromised it's ok. That means no touching it (or anything else) once gloved up.

Also as a patient I have had endoscopic surgery for kidney stones with my turban on in Srinagar and they didn't make me remove it. Helped that my urologist surgeon was also a Sikh and he had his on in the OR as well.

North America might be a different story or UK, not quite sure.

I routinely wear my turban in theatre without a cover. With regards the Kara I take it off and put it into my pocket. I am a Vascular Surgeon and don’t want to risk infections, etc.  Some anaesthetist who are Sikh end up wearing a cover over their turban as the Surgeon requests it and I have when requested to by my orthopaedic colleagues.

I was also having the same question

what I’ve now gathered from reading the answers is that we Sikhs do not have to remove our turban before entering the Operating room, rather only cover with a orthopaedic hood or surgical cap

is it so??

please let me know
