Where Should I Send My Dasvandh?

i agree with neverforget84dotcom instead of giving your dasvandh to a gurudwara... sikhnet.. or anything else help out the families of shaheed as they are in need..

we talk about singhs that took shaheedi we talk about how they were great and all but we don't make an effort to help their loved ones getta better life.

they are our jumedari.. if we neglect them then thats just sad.

please help them over any other org

Fully agree with Neverforget84 and Kharkooartsy , SUPPORT OUR LIVING SHAHEEDS, the Dharmi Faujis ! They sacrificed all for us and now they are living in poverty, give them hope and honour them.

I came across your post today while researching the concept of Dasvandh. I think I can answer your question and recommend a good charity right here in the United States. I am an MBA with a full time job but wanted to do Sewa that is in line with Sikh teachings. United Sikhs is one such organization that I followed for 2 years before committing to be a sewadar.

For every dollar donated, atleast 90 cents reach the needy directly. The strength of United Sikhs is sewadars like me who work pro bono and with passion. Moreover you can choose where you want your donation to go - the projects are mainly in three areas - civil and human rights advocacy (protecting our right to kakaars, helping Sikhs with legal counsel free of charge - for example we secured a family refuge in Canada after the breadwinner was killed by the Taliban); secondly - we have the Sikh Aid projects - in 2010 we continue to provide aid to the 300 families at Panja Saheb who lost their homes in Pakistan floods and also those displaced by the Taliban, to the people of Haiti etc; Thirdly we have a number of ways to help empower the community - scholarships to low income families in Punjab (India), Sun Smile school for Siklighar sikhs in Delhi, Gurmat camps across the globe, educare community center in NYC, blood donation and feed the hungry drives............In short, you can chose the project you wish to fund and we make sure that's where the donation goes. You can also chose to get involved directly for performing the sewa - as we are a volunteer based organization.

Supporting Sikligars Sikhs is very important as we often forget them, yet they are such an important part of Sikh community and rich history.

Sikligars Sikhs were the lohars (ironsmiths/blacksmiths) who once specialized in the craft of making and polishing weapons. Once more commonly known as Gaddilohars the term Sikligar was bestowed on these men who fashioned iron by Guru Gobind Singh who turned Lohgarh (the Iron fort at Anandpur Sahib) into the Sikh Armoury. In 2009, SHS, a benevolent Sikh group from Australia, filmed a shocking documentary called ‘Slumgdog Sikhs;’ which showed how Sikhligar families lived in the Sultanpuri colony of New Delhi. This revelation propelled the STARAE project to progress from a project for rural students to a project also for students from poor ‘colonies’ in the urban sector. Hence, in 2010, with donations from Sikhs in Bangkok and the Bayan Baru Gurdwara sangat of Penang and individuals from Delhi, UNITED SIKHS sponsored 110 Sikhligar students at Sun Smile School, Sultanpuri, New Delhi. In the same year, SHS, requested UNITED SIKHS to take over their scholarship project for 100 students, sponsored by donors from the USA and Australia, at Sun Smile School, bringing the total number of students sponsored at this school under STARAE to 210.

Great responses here indeed, I wonder on the same question from time to time.

However I do wish Khalsaaid could answer the same question as did the united sikhs for ever $1 , 90 cents goto the needy.This is not being picky I know the awesome seva they do,and I support them at present, but a clear answer as rain should be appearing if sangat is asking such a question.
