Sikh Council (Uk) - Launch On 11 December

Recommended Posts

Jagtar Singh,

How open is the meeting on the 11 December and is the expected way of raising any concerns via a formal established jathebhandi or Gurdwara committee only?

In the event of none of the established naujwaan jathebandis coming forward, would an attendance of younger Sikhs be allowed to voice their opinions even if they are not endorsed by any of the above mentioned jathebhandis or Gurdwaras?

Thanks

There have been three open consultation meetings publicised well in advance on the Sikh Channel in the North (Leeds), Midlands (Wolverhampton) and South (Southall) over the last three to four months. These meetings have each been very well attended, including youngsters.

There have also been around six to eight live programmes on the Sikh Channel about the Sikh Council (UK) when calls have been taken from viewers.

All recent Path Time programmes in different towns and cities have also taken views of the local Sangat about the Sikh Council (UK).

Many have also sent comments on the constitution and the work of the Sikh Council (UK) when visiting the web site: http://sikhcounciluk.org/ and via email: info@sikhcounciluk.org. Please email opinions as soon as possible before 11 December.

The constitution stipulates General Assembly meetings should be attended by delegates. These are those individuals that member organisations have nominated and paid an affiliation fee of £250 for each delegate.

There is a need for discipline and adherence to the constitution especially for the inaugural General Meeting on 11 December. It will be seen as a failing if we do not remain disciplined and adhere to the Constitution. Some are hoping the Sikh Council (UK) will not succeed due to vested interests and would seize any opportunity to criticise. Apparently there is already a letter that is circulating from a few dubious individuals in and around Southall.

Etablished naujwaan jathebandis still have time to come forward and become members and send delegates. So far Young Sikhs (UK) is the only organisation that has nominated three young delegates (two are young Bibis). A few Gurdwaras appear to have also put forward some younger people as their delegates, but they are an exception.

If any youngsters wish to be co-opted into the 51-member Executive Committee (there will be 21 co-opted) please email your details to: info@sikhcounciluk.org.

However, it will be the 30 selected on 11 December that will decide on the 21 to be co-opted. If established naujwaan jathebandis could affiliate, send delgates and no doubt get some into the 30 selected for the Executive Committee it is more likely that more youngsters will be co-opted and give the Sikh Council (UK) a better balance.

If established naujwaan jathebandis miss this opportunity youngsters may feel let down and excluded. Blaming Gurdwaras and other Sikh organisations will be a lame excuse.

Affiliations from Gurdwaras and leading Sikh organisations have been coming from across the UK.

Is there any possibility that the council allow someone to represent SikhSangat.com? We are not established organization nor we plan to become one because of various reasons. I think it would be a great platform for us to voice youth's concern in mature manner in uk.

Please complete the affiliation form with details of up to three delegates and email to: info@sikhcounciluk.org ASAP. The form will need to be signed and the affiliation fee paid and returned to the address shown on the form. Sikh Sangat has been in existence for over 3 years and many consider it an 'organisation' in the broadest sense of the word if not in the traditional sense of the word.

The Sikh Channel is expected to have a live programme at 1.30pm today about the Sikh Council (UK). The Panth Time programme from Huddersfield on the Sikh Channel at 8pm tonight will also cover the Sikh Council (UK).

Sangat TV will have a programme called Sanjhi Awaz about the Sikh Council (UK) that is to be broadcast on tonight at 8pm and repeated on Sunday 28 November at 11am and 9.15pm.

It appears a programme was not on the Sikh Channel at 1.30pm today and the Sanjhi Awaz programme on Sangat TV started a bit earlier. The latter was quite good, although I only watched it from 8 to 8.30 and mised the first third.

In the past 17 Gurdwaras have been named on Sikh Sangat under the topic ‘Gurdwara Party Halls’ where there is an issue. Following recent announcements this number has probably come down.

To date it appears only two of these seventeen Gurdwaras have affiliated - Telford and Sunderland.

Im not defending these gurdwaras, but would it have been an option to let them join without any conditions and then kinda work on them from the inside(the sikhcouncil)?

You know some Gurdwaras have financial problems, and some are just plain greedy, but would the Sikhcouncil be prepared to help out those gurdawaras who genuinely need money, to prevent them taking gurdawara down anti-gurmat path?

SCUK are taking comments off their website when valid questions are asked. I posted a few comments in relation to adherence to Akal Takht Sandesh by Gurdwaras who allow meat and alcohol on site which have been subsequently removed. I'm not trying to rock any boats but I expected transparency not censorship.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
