Okay so since in SIkhi, you have to get rid of Kaam and Krodh.

Since you give up so much stuff. how do you stay happy?

My parents have taken amrit Rehat and they are a bad example to me.

There always cocky, most of the time mad at me. Always have headaches.

There both 40.

They do paath and for the time they do paath they are the least annoying at that time.

All they do is go to work come home and sleep and repeat. They have no friends

They dont go to any parties or anything fun. the only place they go is Gurdwara,

This is really effecting me badly like making me feel socially awkward and makes me feel like you give up too much in sikhi.

So i was wandering all of you guys who are very religous and have taken amrit.

Are you guys happy with your life?

Because you have to give up all of the pleasurable things in your life, Then how do you still live happily?

Because you have to give up all of the pleasurable things in your life, Then how do you still live happily?

You have to think of worldy pleasures like a test. On the one hand you have candy, wealth, health, youth and beauty and many pleasures, on the other hand you have a ragged piece of cloth.

The cloth may look ragged but the lord is testing you.

Once you choose the ragged cloth it is instantly transformed into a next to priceless emerald

The more wholeheartedly you choose/ embrace the cloth/ emerald the more priceless it becomes and the happier it makes you (beyond any happiness the world can give) until one day it becomes a priceless magical diamond with all knowledge of the world and the power to give you anything you want and more, the pleasures it is able to give are infinate and unmatched in all of creation.

The thing is that you have to take a step away from the world (as hard as is may be) to see what you are truly missing out on. One way to do this is to take a good look at the world, the instability and the duality in it. The world is imperfect, flawed. There is good and evil, pleasure and pain, you may be happy at one point and suicidal the next. You may be walking one minute and sprawled on the sidewalk with your throat slit the next. You may be a beautiful and chaste with everything to live for one moment and raped and ruined the next, you may have a wife and children, a mansion, personal jet and celebrity friends one moment and divorced and bankrupt with no friends the next.

For every single little bit of worldy happiness you gain, u get the same amount or more pain. This is a fact. Look around you, nobody is truly happy. Budda said the world is ALL suffering. Even when one seems totally happy, every one will always harbour desires (want something they don't have.)

Every desire is pain because it is something you do not possess. Once you possess it you immediately want something else. This is a fact. 'On to the next one'.

One may say well riches can't make me happy but love can. Love on earth is conditional unless you are a saint and have turned away from the world and grabbed the piece of cloth and held on to it wholeheartedly. Your mother may love you but if u kill her husband who she adores, she won't. Your girlfriend/ wife may love you but if you cheat on her repeatedly or hurt her badly enough she won't.

We all look for unconditional love on earth and die without having found it. Only god and his saints (who are not different from the lord) are capable of love that is unconditional. We constantly test each other to see if we have unconditional love for each other and are constantly dissapointed, even if one does not do evil deeds towards another, the mind will always think bad thoughts as long as it is controlled by maya, we cannot control our minds without the lord and so we are harmed by the negative thoughts of others. This is not unconditional love. If we loved each other unconditionally we would strive to quiet our minds/ give them up to god so as to never cause another harm.

So if worldy posessions and worldly love will not bring us true happiness what have we got to hold on to? We have to surrender ourselves totally and realise that the One thing that will make us happy beynd all comprehension, more than all these base desires, yes and a million zillion times more than sex and any drug you could ever take (I'm speaking the truth), was with us, within us all along.

With love, good deeds and the True naam, gods true name which is truth, one can experience this.

Japjeev Singh Jee,

You have mentioned a few different related issues here, so I'll need to answer them separately.

1)Kaam i.e lust, and krodh-anger, are not two urges that should be let loose without controls, and without the wisdom to work out, when and where they are appropiate. Sikhi does not involve sacrificing these two, but learning the art of utilising them in a constructive manner, beneficial to ourselves, humanity and the universe, as well as pleasing to God. We need kaam in order to reproduce and bond the relationship with our married ones even closer. Likewise krodh is a useful weapon to employ when under threat as Sikh history testifies. Sikhi teaches us the art of using, not abusing these two. A person with uncontrolled lust and anger, can pose a threat not just to others, but themselves as well.

2)A lot of 'it' (as you have stated), is not about kaam and krodh. Sikhi is far bigger than this two feelings. Sikhi involves a lifestyle based on wisdom, truth, love and true peace and joy, of being in rising spirits, of being accountable, responsible and informed. Sikhi is about progress, determination, vision, enthusiasm, caring, sharing and being a blessing.

3)In relation to what I have just stated in (2), be patient with your parents. They are making an effort to do away with unnecessary relationships and friendships, to understand God's Will for their lifes and to go to the gurudwara to learn about Sikhi. There is nothing antisocial about this and in time all of this will bear fruit. They are not wasting their money on drugs, nicotine, drink and parties but using and saving it responsibly and for that you need to be proud of them and support them. While you are ranting about them they are probably praying for your success and happiness everytime they pray or go to the gurudwara.

4)Dont let this affect you badly and make you feel socially awkward as you said. This summer I had to help a 24 year old white English lad, whose father has gone to jail for crimes related to 'kaam'. Now, that was 'real' socially awkward for this lad, because everyone in his town near Cheddar Gorge knew about his father's crimes. Even his mother was so embarassed. Eventually this lad had to help his mom to give up and move out from their beautiful home overlooking the wonderful Blagdon Lake. If you are a kind person, standing up for the rights of others, doing the right things in your life and are a honest, humble and switched on person who looks after others, you do not have any reason to be socially awkward, especially if you do not take drugs and drink as well.

5)There is no such thing as giving up too much in Sikhi. Sikhi is about taking on a new lifestyle that takes all the rubbish out of your life and in its place puts what is good for you and others. Sikhi replaces the stupidity, ignorance and foolishness, and short sightedness which can be the basis of our thoughts, words and actions, with wisdom and discernment so that truth and power shine in our thoughts, words and deeds.

6)Pleasurable things in life is subjective not objective, and a matter of knowledge and wisdom. People think smoking is a pleasure but it is a very very dangerous habit, costing you money and causing you cancer. People think drinking and getting drunk is pleasurable but ask any AA person and they will tell you better. People think snotting cocaine etc is a pleasurable thing but ask any NA person. Put 10 different foods before an un happy greedy angry person and they will moan, but put a bowl of simple home-cooked dall before a humble, loving, contented person and you will see a smile of pleasure on their face.

7)Life is short and not forever. Hence focus on working out your vision of life and doing what you were sent to do, not on the pursuit of some temporary happiness. Happiness does not come by sleeping around, or getting wasted with drugs and drink, and dancing away in a club till 4 a.m, or becoming a gangster or having loads of friends. Happiness comes by becoming wise, focussing on progress, choosing your friends and habits wisely, spending your time and money wisely and focussing on looking after yourself and others responsibly. True happiness comes through Sikhi, and this is a fact, that you will slowly understand if you start to follow the path of Sikhism.

was my cousin's wedding today. most of my relations skipped the GuruGhar and went straight to the party hall to get bladdered and as usual they drank til they threw up (including the women) and there was the customary punch up.

i went to the GuruGhar rather than that, doesnt make me superior as we're all from the same source and i was like that once. people get happiness from different things bruv. some people depend on alcohol to fuel it, others use other sources. personally i dont think that stuff makes someone genuinely happy as asians especially are problem-drinkers.

some people do things ritualistically without focusing on the why but same goes for why people blindly follow culture like sheep. going to see Guruji isnt a chore! He's the only person that no matter what you've done in life.. the door is always open.

my parents are kinda similar. guess it depends on whether you are attached to your parents? whether you rely on them needing to be a role model or not. as sikhs our role model is Guruji and the countless GurSikhs that gave their lives helping others.

there'll come a time when the drinks, the bars, clubs and the women become tasteless, shallow and bland. thats the time when people begin to value the sources of positive energy in their lives. try doing sewa, eg in the Langar like washing dishes and guarantee you'll feel happier. try reading translations of Gurbani, Guruji is pure love.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
