My grandfather once told me how, when he was a kid, it was always muslims (mirasis) that were the ones that sang shabads in the gurdwaras. He said the first time he saw sikhs singing shabads in a gurdwara was when he arrived in London and started visiting the bhatra gurdwara in the east end (of London) in the 1940's.

That might be true. untill the partition of india-pakistan it was mainly muslims who performed Kirtan in the golden temple.
