ADMIN: PLEASE MAKE THIS A STICKY

Dear Sangat Jio

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

As part of my PhD research (www.leeds.ac.uk/sikhs) I'm looking at the role played by Gurdwaras in teaching young Sikhs about Sikhi. I'd really like to start a WHERE, WHEN, WHAT list of things that go on in Gurdwaras around the UK for young Sikhs. This will help my research, and will hopefully also become a place where people can find out what's happening (as these things aren't always advertised very well).

PLEASE ADD EVENTS IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT

WHAT: Sikh Inspiration Classes

WHERE: Sikh Temple, Chapeltown Rd, Leeds

WHEN: Fridays 6-8pm

WHAT: Tabla Classes

WHERE: Gurdwara Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Bradford

WHEN: Fridays 6pm

ETC ETC

Surprised at the response here, very minimal, in my hometown we have the biggest Gurdwara in Europe and here is the schedule for youth:

Youth Kirtan and Tabla Classes every Thurday from 1800 - 19:30sh

Gatka classess for younger kids and youth starting from Every Saturday from 14:00 onwards till 18:30sh

Nothing else as of yet check in 25 years time as we have had one generation gap of youth missing already from any activities in the Gurdwara!!

Sikhi Discussion Classes at Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara, Stanhope Street, Derby on Fridays, 7.30pm - 10pm.

Punjabi Classes at Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara, Stanhope Street, Derby on Sundays. 10.30am - 12.30pm.

To be honest... the classes are there, the support is there.. but the youth don't want to come.

I dont know what Gudwara's do for the youth of today, but what i do know is the few gurswara's i have visited are in one word Beautiful.

I like the whole 'take your shoes off' concept, not bringing in the dirt of the streets into the lords house, the covering of ones head showed humility and these alone later made me take a step back and think wow, as an 'outsider' as i fully understood why these are important actions in a gurdwara after going into the main section (where the holy scripture was) and seeing such a wonderful sight.

I dont think any other religious place (church, mosque, sinagog, etc...) treats their holy scripture with as much importance, grace and devotion as the sikhs in a gurdwara do.

They way in which the holy scripture is coverd in that sparkly embroidried material with that fluffy thing waved over it to keep the dust off is very pleasent to watch.

With all this in mind, i really should pay another visit soon! :L:

Google me!

please stick to the topic

"What Does Your Gurdwara Do For Youth?"
