Sikh priest on Glasgow temple sex charge

A Sikh priest has appeared in court charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl at a temple in Glasgow.

Surinder Singh is alleged to have touched the girl and tried to kiss her at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in the city's Otago Street on Saturday.

The 52-year-old, who is visiting Scotland from India on a visa, denied the charge at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was remanded in custody after a motion for bail from his lawyer was opposed by the Crown.

Mr Singh is accused of touching the girl on the hands, attempting to kiss her on the mouth, kissing her face and placing food in her mouth at the temple.

'Absconding risk'

Prosecutor Clare Arias said: "The accused is in this country on an Indian passport and is a priest in the temple.

"He has now been dismissed following this alleged incident and he has stated to members of the congregation that he intends to leave the country."

Mr Singh's lawyer, James Mulgrew, told the court that his client was willing to hand his passport into a local police station if he was granted bail but Sheriff John Baird refused the motion.

Sheriff Baird said that Mr Singh would be remanded in custody as there was a "substantial risk of him absconding and failing to appear".

The married priest will appear again next month for trial.

IF he's guilty, hope someone takes his head off. There are so many Singhs who become Gianis out of love for Sikhi, spend their whole lives learning Santhiya, Kirtan etc, but most Gurudwara committees prefer to hire cheap random faujis who'll do as they're told.

Saying that, I really hope he didn't do what he's been charged with.

Guys this is the same old story, we can go on forever wasting our time by cursing this pretend granthi. The fact is like many others before him, he probably pretended to be a granthi in order to get a visa to this country and eventually become a resident, at which point he would have quit his granthi job never to be seen in a Gurdwara again. Its simply a means to an end.

Why not try resolving the primary issue here? The fact is there are no controls and regulations around becoming a granthi. Literally any tom, d1ck or harry can pretend to be a granthi, all they need is a turban, long beard and the basics of Sikhi. When you have no controls around who becomes a granthi, it leads to poor quality granthis being recruited at Gurdwaras along with passport hunters.

Like Aman said there has to be a serious change on the hiring process of Granthis, i think we should no longer bring so much granthis from India but train a new breed of western born granthis to fit the roles, obviously they would need to payed a decent salary to.

VerbalArtistry, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The position of a granthi is probably the most important role/job within the Sikh faith, yet we pay them a pittance and most of the congregation usually look down on them. We are simply reaping what we are sowing……
