Sikh Priest On Glasgow Temple Sex Charge

Recommended Posts

Why not try resolving the primary issue here? The fact is there are no controls and regulations around becoming a granthi. Literally any tom, d1ck or harry can pretend to be a granthi, all they need is a turban, long beard and the basics of Sikhi. When you have no controls around who becomes a granthi, it leads to poor quality granthis being recruited at Gurdwaras along with passport hunters.

Hmmm.....

Maybe that explains why some of them can't answer quite straight forward questions on the faith when asked?

I have to say, some of them can sing very well though and they do seem to have memorised bani.

The report is appearing in more and more online papers. Anyone know this Granthi? Has he been in the UK before? Has the committee commented on the situation?

Although I agree we should review this issue in a generic form, we should also be looking into who this individual is and the specific incident.

What does anyone know about this Surinder Singh, where does he come from in India and can someone post his picture? We can get the Punjab Singhs to look into his circumstances in Punjab. At the end of the day there needs be accountability from the individual and even the committees lax attitude to selecting this Granthi.

I think we've got to the root of the problem which is we need a proper selection process for granthis and gianis. However the committees themselves are to blame for this situation. First of all visas for gianis are obtained by Gurdwaras showing to the embassy that they will pay a giani at least minimum wage and accomodation and free food (which is supposed to be free for everybody).

When gianis get here they are actually not paid what is stated on their sponsorship. A top giani is only paid around £80 per week and on that is supposed to feed his wife and children back home. He has to act as a virtual security guard for the Gurdwara and eats his food from the langar.

Hardly any Gurdwara pays a Giani minimum wage (against the Uk law) nor do they provide gianis with wage slips & P60's. Gianis PAYE is not paid nor is their National Insurance Contributions. How on earth is anybody expected to work in those conditions?...would any of us work at a place where we were not paid minimum wage, or given a wage slip or a P60?....They are made to work under the laalach of the fact that after 5 years they will get indefinite leave to remain in the UK and that after that they can call over their wives and families.

The worst scenario is when a giani has tolerated this for 2 years and the committee changes and then tells the giani thanks but we dont need you anymore. What is that poor giani expected to do? he has literally been abused by his employers for 2 years and now told he wont even be getting to see his 5 years out.

The other issue here is the blatent use of the Gurdwara in order to facilitate illegal immigrants into the UK. There is no doubt that Gurdwaras have been used to bring ilegal immigrants into the Uk under the guise of granthis and jathas. To deny this would be naive. What usually happens is if there is 3 in a jatha one will return to India and 2 stay behind having paid up to £10,000 to get here in the first place. The amount of people i have seen ilegal in the UK who piad committees to bring them into the UK as granthis runs into hundreds.

Still that is no excuse for anybody to molest a child...

His name is Surinder Singh ADOL, From Jallandhur. He came towards the end of year 2009, and ran away from his previous employment in midland Gurdwara, in April 2010.

What was the reason he ran away from the previous Gurdwara and which Gurdwara was it? It's a high time we know started implementing proper checks and controls on Granthis and Sewadars at our Gurdwaras, something I would exepect the likes of new SCUK to implement.

There was obviously some history there if he ran off from his previous role on midlands, however he was easily able to slot into another Granthi role in another Gurdwara. The system's open to abuse and we have no control or coordination over it.

The weblink below is an example of Gurdwara Child Protection Policy implemented by Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Hitchin which is available on their website (see link below). Again some good practice from Hitchin Sikhs which was unfortunatly triggered after a similar incident occured there

http://gurdwara-of-h...dures&Itemid=66

The Glasgow incident involving Granthi Surinder Singh Adol (from Jallandhar) and a child was a prime example of a predator manufacturing an opportunity to attempt to abuse the child. The child had just performed a shabad on the Gurdwara stage, Surinder pointed out some "mistakes" he claimed she had made on the harmonimimn and told the girl's parents that he will show her the right keys to use. Using this ploy, he invited the child into his room and then acted inappropriately with her. The child was clever and brave enough to scream which attracted immediate attention and Surinder was unable to deny the incident. With Sangat pressure the issue was taken to the authorities. Altough Surinder eventually admitted his guilt when confronted by the sangat, he's pleaded not guilty in court.

These incidents are isolated, nevertheless one incident is one too many and it is unfortunately incidents like this that people remember. Also a supportive stucture is needed to be developed for the the victims in these incidents as it will only push them away from Sikhi.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
