But our individual Nitnem kirtan sohila before bed should include the 4 shabads

For recitation purposes you can just say "Sohila" and read away. 

You can face in any direction... Unless of course, Sakhi has it "Someone faced in so n so direction and Guru Sahib told them off!" Then u do not face in whatever THAT direction is. But yes, recite with concentration before sleeping. 

Afterwards you can do mool mantar if you like. We Sikhs do not fall into ANY superstition when to do Mool Mantar / Gurmantar. Reciting certain baania is a different story, as Sakhi has proof not to read Chandi d vaar after sunset or not to read any bania after Sohila.
