Family activities at the British Museum

Saturday 16 April, 11.00–16.00

...Celebrate Vaisakhi (Sikh New Year) with free family activities. Suitable for all ages.

Learn to tie a turban

Great Court, 11.00–13.00 and 14.00–15.30

Experienced turban wearers will teach you how to tie a traditional Sikh turban. Organised by the Sikh Education Council.

Gatka performance

East Lawn, 14.00–14.30

Come and watch a performance of Gatka, a vibrant Sikh martial art from Punjab. Led by Uptej Singh and Baljit Singh, from Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara, and their students. Accompanied by traditional dhol (drum) players from The Dhol Academy.

Storytelling

Paul Hamlyn Library 11.30–12.00

Listen to a new story inspired by the Sikh fortress turban by writer and storyteller Philippe Cherbonnier.

From an organiser of the event :

the Nanakshahi Calendar is used from an administrative and social perspective, and with that in mind Chet (mid-March) is indeed the beginning of the calendar year. However, as New Year also represents a new beginning, it is not incorrect to say that the Sikh New Year is celebrated on Vaisakhi. As all amritdharis will tell you (well this one anyway!) Vaisakhi represents my New Year, my birthday, my emancipation. How lucky are Sikhs?! We get two New Years! Oh the fun we are going to have with two new year celebrations...
