Sikh Regiment

The Sikh Regiment's glory days my friend...were with the British Army.

You may want to consider learning how to read and subsequently keep yourself up to date with current affairs. That way.....you might understand the utter stupidity of singing the praises of any Indian army regiment when at this very moment they are an international disgrace and laughing stock. Little over a week ago, for the 3rd time in the last 5 years...the United Nations have made an official complaint to the Indian government regarding the conduct of its sikh regiment (which ironicaly included more hindus than actual sikhs.......AND, unlike the original Sikh Regiment of the British Army where every soldier in the Sikh Regiment had to be an amritdhari sikhs and was instantly dismissed if he ever cut his hair or beard...this Indian Army version of the 'sikh' regiment actually actively discourages the amritdharis) during peacekeeping missions in Rwanda and the Congo. Previous complaints from the United Nations centered around the fact that Indian soldiers were indulging in underage sex and corruption. The latest complaint centres around the fact that recently, in Rwanda, there has been a spate of many many children having Indian features being born to local women. Many of whom, it is alleged, victims of rapes by Indian soldiers of the sikh regiment.

At this very moment, the sikh regiment, and the entire Indian Army is considered an international disgrace. An unethical, immoral, corrupt accident waiting to happen.

Its one saving grace, steelman, is that it has dedicated supporters that have never heard of newspapers.

@ West London Singh - WHAT?!? I don't doubt what you're saying but I'd like to read more about this issue myself. Any links to further info?

I guess the Indian government is attempting to besmirch the Sikh name by admitting dodgy characters into the "Sikh" regiment. Why doesn't that surprise me?

You're gonna have to source and read the international quality media, such as The Economist, to read the full damning verdict of what the world thinks of the Indian Army at the moment. But....the story is so serious that even the Indian media....that normally never print anything bad about India....were forced last week to cover the story, albeit with its usual spin.

There were many sikh only regiments before 1984 and they were made up of only sikhs. After June 1984, many sikh only regiments were disbanded and the ones that remained were diluted by recruiting/infiltrating non-amritdharis and hindus. This was done to stop any further mutinies by sikh soldiers as was the case when darbar sahib was attacked.

General Vaidaya was responsible for this decision.

Thanks for that. I'll be giving these and other publications a thorough read. My head is spinning from what you posted about the Sikh regiment in regards to Rwanda, etc. What a disgrace.

I've been (slowly) reading a book by David Omissi that I posted about earlier here.

The book contains translations of letters of Indian soldiers of World War 1 who were in France (not just Sikhs but other communities too). I noticed a few letters where soldiers mention having 'relationships' with the local French jananeean. So it appears as if this type of behaviour isn't uncommon in modern times?

Although slackness of this sort is pretty reprehensible and should be condemned, I think the rape and sex with under aged girls accusations are the more serious.

Yes true till 1984 India followed the system of army which was used by British but during operation blue star Sikh regiment deployed in bihar revolted and marched towards Amrtisar but stopped at Patna.

After this revolt the then army chief which was later killed by Sukha and Jinda started merging these armies not only sikhs but all the regiments were merged even now you can see gorkhas in bihar regiment sikhs in gorkha regiment and so on. Now its more a lottery kinda system soldier under training doesnt know till his last day which regiment he will join in.

There were hindus in sikh regiment before this and during british period. All you need to do is tick your religion sikh in the form unlike today. Keeping uncut beard was mandatory to be a part of sikh regiment even if u dont keep hair but u need to keep the beard and that to uncut.

And one more important thing which sikh regiment now lacks is chandi di vaar it was compulsory for every soldier to learn it by heart. And when ever sikh regiment goes for any type of task the commander does this path loudly with his soldiers.

Now sikh regiment is not more then a joke. That we saw in Kargil 1999 war. Pakistanis killed 3 times more soldiers then indians did.

I think BSF has more sikhs the Sikh regiment right now. Because in reality its BSF who will takes the first assault so they are putting more sikhs in that.

The real Sikg Regiments were during the British Raaj in South Asia -

1984 Was a point of no return - those Dharmi Faujis that left the Indian Army - I salute them and bow my head to them those who still serve in this so called Sikh Regiment which is part of the Hindu Fauj - I have no respect for - they are part of the very army which attack Sri Harmandar Sahib - anyone who claims to be a SIKH OF THE GURU and serves in the forces of armies of India is not a SIKH full stop
