Waheguru jee ka khalsa waheguru jee kee fateh!

Gurudwara Kalgidhar Sahib in Leeds has put a list of names on their notice board, claiming that the people on the list are non members of the gurudwara and furthermore have claimed that the named people have excluded themselves from the sangat. Some of the people on this list were members whereas some of the people on the list were never members and their names simply put on the list because they are the same caste as the people who run the gurudwara.

Moreover this is all being done under the name Gurudwara, a Guru Jee's house, is this really what happens is Guru Jee's house, only people who pay a monthly fee are considered to be not excluding themselves from the sangat, I'm just so disgusted I don't no what to say.

I have attached the list but blanked out the names.

Waheguru jee ka khalsa waheguru jee kee fateh!

That's really bad. It's trying to coerce all of the regular sangat to pay a monthly fee, by trying to shame them on the notice board. If it had been a list of members fair enough, but a list of non-members is out of order.

I mean a gurughar is open to all so if someone from another town visited would they be added to the list? Or is it just a list of locals who attend but don't give a monthly fee? If that is the case then the commitee should consider changing its policy or the alternative is to change the name from Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib Leeds to Leeds Sikh Membership Club, (well so called Sikh)!

It is a list of locals who attend but do not give a monthly fee . These locals are also classified by their caste system. Another of their tactics to coerce money as you so rightly suggested is their rule that members cannot socialise with non members during weddings and other such function, if they do they have to pay a fine, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Meeting_outcome_from_12_July_2009_Gurdwara_Kalgidhar_Leeds.jpg

Just intrigued by what the committee is doing in Leeds.

I take it that this is a closed community of the Bhattras and basically they have built a new Gurdwara and now find it difficult to pay the load hence the need to ask the sangat to contribute.

It sounds almost like a fascist system where the committee steamroller what they want and say it is done in the name of the Sangat but it is really the committee behind it. Then they bring in draconian measures that people must pay a set amount and if they do not then they are fined and then they are shamed and then ostracised and no one is allowed to socialise with them.

Is it just me or does this fascist and illegal?

Please name and shame the committee, maybe this should be brought to the attention of one of the Sikh channels.

It's either the" Name and Shame" approach or" Emotional blackmail" approach, but at the moment nearly everyone seems to be chasing the same Sikh £1.

Between having direct debits going to 3 TV channels, 2 radio stations, Gurdwaras threatening to close down, Gurdwara Building extensions, visiting Kirtinya, visiting Parcharaks, Sikh Projects etc some Committees also want us to become exclusive paying members.

Perhaps it's time for us to realise that there might not be enough maya to go around! And some Gurdwaras/Sikh projects may eventually have to close down.

Don't say that! Waheguru will always save Sikhs from financial ruin no matter how imcompetently we run our businesses and interests.

/sarcasm.
