Guru Gobind Singh Ji'S Attire

This will probably seem like an extremely random thread, but I'm curious.

In photos (which I know, don't necessarily show the Guru Sahibs accurately) Guru Gobind Singh Ji is almost always wearing a small kind of dastar, like this:

Not that it really matters, but is there any evidence to suggest his dastar was like this? Some people tell me he wore a big dhumalla, but that's not really evident from the way people portray him.

Did he wear red/ pink like so many pictures show? Did he wear necklaces? Or did he wear a blue bana? Where did the tradition of the bana come from if Guru Gobind Singh didn't wear one?

It doesnot Matter what color did Maharaji wore, It was a RAJYOG pehra. and in this yog, Maharaji wore expensive clothes and rich colorful attire and also made his Sikhs wear the same. That is why Mughals and Pahari Raje were envied and jealous of Why Guru Gobind singh ji is wearing expensive clothing,Keeping Prasadi Haathi , keeping expensive horses and Shashters(which even Pahari Raje didbot have with them)and so much.

Here are some photo's of the Gaj-Gah of Guru Gobind Singh Jee that is preserved at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib, it's quite big. So assuming that Guru Sahib would have worn it in a matter that it would have been secure on his dastaar, his dastaar would have been pretty big. I've included a pic of a Nihang Singh with a similiar size Gaj-Gah for a reference.

Also here's some pics of the Kalgi and pearl necklace of Guru Gobind Singh Jee's that's also preserved at Hazoor Sahib. And a pic of the dastaar of Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee's, which is 24 yards/20 metres/60 feet. So one can just assume that the dastaars worn by the Guru Sahib's must have been bigger/longer than is usually portrayed in paintings.

As well there is an account in a Mughal record of the time describing Guru Gobind Singh Jee with an 18" tall dastaar, dressed in regal attire.

Oh ok, I didn't know this... looks like something I'm gonna have to do research into.

Wow, thanks! Brilliant response... and it's very interesting that Guru Gobind Singh Ji probably looked v different to how he's portrayed! Guru Hargobind Singh Ji's dastar was 20 meteres? Wow!! Amazing.

Can anyone answer this:

Did he wear a bana? Where did the tradition of the bana come from if Guru Gobind Singh didn't wear one?

I remember one amritdhari sikh from Sri Ganganagar who was wearing rings in all his finfer and gold Karas and Chains, bracelet and beautiful dastar. He was traveling to foreign country from Shri Guru Ramdas Airport in Amritsar.

The passport control officer at the airport(also a Amritdhari Sikh) told him,"As per Rehitnama, you are not suppose to wear all this; Donot you know this is prohibted". This sikh replied saying,"Listen my brother, My father is very rich(pointing to Guru Gobind singh ji 's Potrait), I want to show to the world his sons are also very rich. When guru gobind singh ji used to ride on Neela with beautiful attire and shashters same time we would tell his Gursikhs to wear the same beautiful attire and go for fight or shikar.Have you seen anywhere where Satguru is very good clothes and telling his sikhs not to do the same; BUT IMPORTANT POINT IS IS THE SIKH SHOWING OFF HIS EGO BY WEARING EXPENSIVE CLOTHES OR sIKH IS WEARING BEAUTIFUL ATTIRE AND REMAIN NIMANA FROM HIS HEART AT THE CHARAN OF SATGURU. MAIN THING IS HOYE NIMANA JAG RAHO,NANAK NADRI PAAR.

We have to remember that the pictures that are drawn by people are just pictures. They have no reflection on how each Guru Sahib looked. Nice as they are, we should not fall into the worship of them as have Hindus, Christians of their Deities.

Dhan Akal!

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
