The name of a potential Sikh homeland should come from our glorious history and mythology; something that has been mentioned in our scriptures, etc., much like the Jews and Israel.

What about Begampura? It has a great history behind it and could be used to explain to any non-Sikhs (and some Sikhs I'd imagine) what Begampura was. Like Kopsingh said Khalistan has been stigmatised by the Indian government, and I'm sure all the uncles and sons of the uncles who've shouted themselves blue in the face shouting "Khalistan Zindabaad" over the years won't like to relinquish the name 'Khalistan' so easily.

Personally I'd stay away from anything containing 'stan' full-stop. People residing in western countries have cottoned onto the fact that countries which have 'stan' in their name have large Islamic populations and we don't want any confusion on that front.

Khalkhand? Panjkhand?

Interesting thoughts, I think about this occasionally as well and agree with you on this.

Wow, perhaps you should reconsider your opinion as the concept of a begumpura city has been mentioned in Gurbani.

Begampura is a legendary city in Gurbani as HSDH pointed out above. It's the perfect realm of peace, truth and honour. But if other sects have co-opted it for their own slogans then maybe not. It's a shame.

I still wouldn't use anything with 'stan' in it. You'll get lots of people taking the mick - of course we shouldn't shy away from mick-takers but if we've got the opportunity to put ourselves on the map - as it were - what better opportunity to start with a brilliant-sounding name for our own country. Plus, let's be a bit imaginative! It's not as if Khalistan is mentioned in Gurbani and therefore HAS to be used.

*Cue someone popping up and telling me Khalistan HAS been mentioned in Gurbani and therefore MUST be the ONLY name for a Sikh homeland* :biggrin2:

when ever I think of khalistan I take inspitlration from Jews they have less population than Sikhs but they have their own homeland... We need Khalistan because Indian Govt is not giving us Justice.. Now what we have to do is to save our sikh brother and sisters from abandoning sikhi and be prepared because nobody knows when the time come... if you dont like khalistan then why not to keep it Punjab... because when khalistan will become reality we will snatch back our west punjab too.
