often people come out with elaborate theories, super saakhis and random quotes, try to explain theories such as karam, hukam.. blah blah.. just to make them selves feel ok about doing NOTHING.. that's all i see.

When it comes to their own families.. then nothing is left to hukkam or karam. relentlessly seek best schools, homes, cars education.. leaving nothing to chance...

Absolutely spot-on.

if you have love for the members of your family, and your seeing your family fall apart you will do as much as you can in your power to make things right. Beyond that it's out of your control and at all times you remain Chardikala.

A Panthic Sewadar should be the same. He should be koumi Dhardi, he should feel the pain of our people. The pain of poverty ridden shaheed families, our brothers on drugs, our sisters selling themselves short.homeland occupied by butchers. the pain must remain there, the spark must be present at the same time remain chardikala. think concisely, make short/med/long term plans.. help Sikh schools for the future.. educate the families now.. send money to Shaheed pariwaars.

My post had nothing to do with what you've said. The reason I made it was so many Sikhs feel disheartened and may feel they too need not continue due to the negatives they see around them. So if it assists them to remain Chardikala, then that's not negative. Do as much as one can for the Panth but if does not bring to fruition to what you've expected be not worried.

Fateh.

The thing is, we have nothing but worry for our Panth. At least with other religions they have some postive news which makes the faithful happy. But the situation for the Sikhs is extremely depressing.

-The rise of the Kala Afghani heretic movement. They have managed to impress most so called Khalistanis to join their camp. The missionaries have whole heartedly joined the Kala afghani movement.

-Today's Sikh has absolutely no respect for the authority of the Akaal Takht. When the Akal Takht says one thing, Sikhs today do their own marzee instead of listening to the Akaal takht. We can see this recentely with how most Sikhs are disregarding the directive of the Akal takht to no avoid the Akhauti Parcharak Dhundha.

-As for Akal Takht's Jathadar, sorry to say he is little more than a puppet of Badal. As a result the authority of the Akal Takht gets damaged. People say, "why should we listen to the Akal takht, it's Jathadar is a chamcha of Badal".

-The once great Sikh party Shiromani Akali Dal is the personal property of Badal. During the Gurdwara reform movement, hundreds of Sikhs attained shaheedi and formed this party, now this party is working against Sikh interests.

-The Sant Samaj is now openingly supporting Badal and even formed an alliance with them. This is very depressing for the general Sikh population. Kala Afghanis, missionaries who used to openly say all sorts of bad things about Sants are now saying "See! we told you so".

-We still have no been able to get justice for 1984 and the blood bath Sikhs indured after 84.

-Almost the whole Panth has become Patit. Today in Punjab all males under 35 are mostly Patit.

-Our so called Sikh girls(even in India) only want to marry Patits/monay. They don't want to marry Saabat Soorat Gursikh males. As a result many young men are becoming Patit.

-Our gender imbalance is also something which puts us to shame.

-We are losing our members to Radhasoamis and other fake Gurudoms at an alarming rate.

Do we have anything positive going on in the Panth? I don't think so. Our situation is very very very depressing and sad. Only Guru jee can help us.

A depressing but true read.

I suppose as individuals we can only affect and control our own individual lives. If we master our own jeevans and enough Sikhs do so successfully, then change can occur. But it will take time.

I stopped looking towards India / Panjab for inspiration a long time ago. There is a thread in the Gupt section about bringing up children in a foreign country in the Gursikh way, and the associated problems and fears of being far from Panjab and the knock-on effect this has on children in terms of their knowledge and love for the faith diminishing because they aren't around many Sikhs and Sikh institutions, etc. I would say there is a greater quality of Sikh in foreign countries than there are in Panjab. I haven't got any numbers to back-up my claim but I'm basing my opinion on observation.

One final issue I would like to make is regarding monay Sikhs (yes, I'm aware some don't consider them to be Sikhs, but for arguments sake I'll call them Sikhs in order to make my point). There are many monay who have a lot of love and respect for our Gurus, Gurbani, our shaheeds and our glorious history. Yes could you argue "Well they obviously don't love Sikhi enough to become keshdhari / amritdhari". Whilst this is an extremely valid argument I would say we need to reach out to those monay Sikhs who DO have affection for the faith as they are different to those who mock and belittle the Gursikh way. The issue isn't as black and white as it is sometimes portrayed. If we extend a hand of friendship and brotherhood - genuinely and not because we just want to swell our ranks - then reaching out to monay who are as passionate and in some cases as knowledgeable about Sikhi as your average Gursikh is key.

We need to nip this worrying "Them and Us" situation that is developing in places like the UK between Gursikhs and monay. This will only happen with dialogue and not with segregation and hostility.

I find a monay who embraces the Gursikh way of life out of his own volition is more valuable than a keshdhari who follows Sikhi because he's scared of his dad if he doesn't toe the Sikh line. We don't want paper Sikhs - we want the genuine article and that comes from within to begin with. Once you start following the Gursikh way and once Gurbani starts having an effect on your aatma, the kesh, the dhaari, the amrit, etc., will eventually come. I have no doubt about this.

Anyway sorry to digress. I guess my point is that let's look at ourselves and become the best darn Sikhs we can be individually, and then hope others are doing the same then move forward from that point.

People often say that out of the world faiths, it is Christians who are the most pessimistic due to the concept of eternal damnation looming over their heads, along with Original Sin - being born into sin, living in sin and possibly dying in sin.

However, I think that title has been wrongly given and actually belongs to Sikhs.

Never have I known a faith group to be so pessimistic about absolutely everything!

You have painted a very depressing picture on the state of affairs of our religion.

Why don't we talk of finding solutions to our situation?

It is of no use of talking of problems if we are not prepared to do something about it.

The problems have to be faced head on and tackled positively.

Please do not generalise and make such ridiculous statements.

Sikhism as a faith and religion is the most optimistic of all other faiths.

Sikhs are and never will be pessimistic and will always be in Chardi Kala.

I am not one to make sweeping generalisations, one to make a point without any evidence to support my claim or one to say something completely ridiculous or considered to be "out there". Why would anyone do that in the first place?

Whilst Sikhee is the definition of optimism, a few Sikhs are actually optimistic.

Just look at this forum as a prime example. There's pessimism about our the "state" of our youth and the panth, about politics, about our sisters, our brothers, about Islam and "conversion" just to name a few examples. How about all the positives? About all the amazing things that Sikhee stands for, that Sikhee is and that Sikhee gives to us?

Also as a side note, when has God become so restricting? If he seriously cares about some of the trivial things that i've read on here, then i'm sorry, he is not God.

Vaaheguroo Jee Kaa Khaalsaa Vaaheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
