For some people this is a stepping stone to move on to Kirtan (Immortal Productions do only state the truth in their Albums, even if they do use more than the harmonium (Vaja) and tabal in their songs.

Does anybody know when the Harmonium was introduced to Sikhi? and when it took precedent over all other instuments? Why has Sikhi embraced the Harmonium (vaja) so much? Did the 10 Gurus play Harmonium (vaja).

Any historical facts would be good on the Harmonium (vaja). ie when invented, who brought it to india and when they brought it to india etc etc..?

Another way of looking at it is which instruments should or should not be used in Kirtan from the list below:

Harmonium (vaja)?

Tabla?

Tanti Saaj?

Joree?

Voilin?

Flute?

Electric Organ?

Guitar?

Electric Guitar?

dholki?

dhol?

chimtia?

saxiphone?

trumpet?

convetional drums?

a mixer?

an ochestra?

What do you think is within bounds or out of bounds for 1) Kiran 2) Religous Panthic Songs.

along with shastar vidya and the dasam granth, raag vidya (science of music) was banned by the british, as this was what gave sikhs the warrior power, and if removed, the sikhs would forget their identity and source of power. Also this is why there is no dasam granth inside Golden Temple, as they were removed, yet inside Non-Panjab Gurdwara Takhts (Patna Sahib -Bihar and Hazoor Sahib-Nanded) There is dasam granth, as the british never bothered with sikhs there.

now if you look at kirtan done at the gurdwara, have u seen raagis playing the following instruments, Saranda? Taus? Dilruba? NO, thats because the british banned them, and force fed us that incredibly boring instrument, vajaa (harmonium), which is a french instrument, not hindustani. Saranda was an instrument invented by guru arjan dev ji, dilruba/taus was invented by guru gobind singh, and now what do we have to show for their inventions, nothing! Raag Vidya was practiced especialy by Khalsa sikhs and sufis, now that Sufis have gon to pakistan, we have lost the knowledge and authenticity of the technique. Just like how we have lost genuine raag vidya, we have lost SHASTAR VIDYA, and now theres controversy over dasam granth. Had the british never meddled, then there wud b no conspiracies and doubts about whats original, genuine etc.

Luckily there are some groups/ppl who are trying to bring back raag vidya traditional instruments - watch the first two videos especially, lovly jubbly!

especially watch the Rabab/Saranda video, at 4:02 listen to wat Professor Surinder Singh Says

It's made it to number one on the Asian Network Chart (based on online purchases in the UK), just been played on the BBC Asian Network with a little intro from the presenter, saying how there are people for and against what happened in 84.

Now that's some exposure to a wide audience regardless of what the BBC or anyone else thinks of the content of the track.

This track is being discussed on BBC Asian Network by Nihal following the news.

Nihal has urged listeners to watch the u tube video with english translations so that it can be discussed.

Someone who was involved with the track (I didn't catch the name) is a guest on the show.
