Surprised that nobody seems to be talking about this, looks like it should be some really good coverage for us:

The Story of The Turban - Showing on BBC One, Thursday 12th April @ 11.20pm

In September 2011, Sikhs from all over Britain gathered in Parliament Square to protest. The focus of their concern was the turban. Since the terrorist attacks of the 21st century Sikhs believe their turbans have singled them out for discrimination. In a case of mistaken identity the Sikhs claim they've been wrongly regarded as religious terrorists and subjected to increased airport security searches.

This documentary traces the history of the turban in the Sikh religion, from its roots in Moghul India, through the battlefields of Europe, to the fight for British Sikhs to wear it without fear. It reveals that the turban is a crucial symbol of the Sikh faith - one that Sikhs will even risk their lives for.

Sikh organisation backs BBC 'Turban' documentary

Apr 11, 2012 11:40 PM|

The Director of the Network of Sikh Organisations (NSO) Lord Singh has advised the BBC’s department of Religion & Ethics for a series of documentaries, including a forthcoming one ‘The Story of the Turban’ which is to be aired on Thursday 12th April at 23:20 on BBC One.

Following on from the 11th September terror attacks, Sikhs across the world have increasingly faced the negative rebound of Islamism. The Sikh turban and beard often being mistaken with images broadcast of known Islamist terrorists. The backlash has included verbal threats, physical attacks and in the U.S culminating with the murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Mesa Gas station owner from Arizona. Sikhs in Britain have also been physically assaulted in a number of cases of ‘mistaken identity.’

The documentary traces the history of the turban in the Sikh tradition, from its roots in Moghul India, through to the battlefields of Europe and the fight for British Sikhs to wear outward symbols of their faith. The documentary reveals the turban as a crucial symbol of Sikhism and delves into the many sacrifices given to preserve Sikh identity.

Credit where credit is due, this programme has been created due to the Dastaar Day initiated and organised by Sikh Channel last year.

I remember all the haters and opposition to this (including Sangat TV) and all the noise about why it was done. Where are these people now? Do they still think it was a bad idea?

This programme will create awareness and has reached mainstream media because of the Sikh Channel, no doubt about it.

I totally agree with you RebelSingh but at least its better than nothing. Soemtimes we are our own worst enemies. You look at how organised other religions are and how they have PR and media relations. What do we have the same old washed out non-pr savvy panthic leaders. Unless we up our PR game and start to use the media we are always gonna be 2nd class.

Lets start to put some intelligence and strategy behind our struggle for justice and awareness.
