Whats The Point Of Keeping Your Hair Long?

To the person who started this thread, you make some very convincing points. I am going through the same process as you are now, in trying to decide whether or not to keep my hair. It will be a very hard decision for me as I have been keeping it for 18 years of my life, and I think my Dad really wants me too keep it. I get no trouble from my friends (who come from all countries) and they are actually very supportive.

If we could possibly exchange emails to discuss this further - that would be great.

Our guru told us and thats that!

Did you know Jesus also kept his hair AND ontop of that he wore a turban! He was a true sikh.A sikh guru gobind singh ji probably wanted!

There should really be no reason to cut your hair other than your own self.If we can get away from our pleasure then we can get closer to waheguru. We have to let go of our five sins to get closer to god.I know it is difficult but it has to be done.

To the person who started this thread (and anyone else who wants to know why we keep our hair).....

As said before we keep our hair because God made us that way. To cut it is to say God got it wrong, and instead of following God, we then follow the person who first cut their hair and started off the man made trend of cutting hair. If a man cuts his hair including his beard he deforms his face. It's just like drinking, smoking, herion, cocaine, they are all man made pass times that some people choose to follow, however a Sikh never should !!!

You're probably doing this for a woman or women. Alot of women are drawn to more feminine features, like flowers, make up, jewellery, flowery dresses and skimpy little sandals etc etc. A male face with the hair scrapped off it does look more pretty and feminine and therefore women are more likely to be drawn to a pretty little lady like face, as it fits in well with all their other feminine collection. Especially as the media reinforces this!

I put the question back to you:

All 10 Gurus didn't cut their hair, drink alcohol, smoke or commit Adultery. So why would we do any of these things including cutting our hair? If anyone can answer this question I'd like to know????

For eg: you know your not supposed to have a phone on in an exam or talk whilst having an exam? Otherwise your in trouble.... (Apply 2 Sikhi) a question thats props up often in sikhi is why do you have to cover your head when you go into darbar shaib? most people dont know but obviously you still do it dont you??

some things you just dont know properly but you know not to do them.

you need to lose the ego in order to meet God. the only way to lose the ego is to give the head to the Guru. that means we accept the Guru's way of thinking, and that includes keeping the hair. i've been through this whole process of doubts that you guys are going through. trust me, once you take amrit and walk the path (while continuously going to satsangat), your whole mindset will change and you will not only realise the mahaan kirpa of kesh, but wish that you had taken amrit earlier in life.

by the way, bhagti is stored in the kesh :)

If you cut your hair, it will grow back because it is supposed to be long. It's part of the bana of a human being. Just like stripes are part of a Zebra's bana, or tusks are part of a elephant's bana.

God won't be mad at you if you cut it, nor will he be happy if you grow it out. We keep it long because we prefer His roop over the latest "fashion trends".

There isn't one.

Keeping your hair uncut was demanded during times of war to maintain your idnetity. IT's not revelant to this world.

This world is full of lies. Be wary. Honesty is your only means of telling truth from fiction.

Why do you cut your nails then?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
