Simply Vahiguroo or Ikongkar or shalok/mool mantar also should be good. But i think depending on each individual surti anything reciting from gurbani is good before eating the meal...but what matter is your mind when you recite from gurbani not which part of gurbani you recite..again what mater is your mind engaging in gurbani not when/what you recite in gurbani..gurbani is agam agad bodh, as bhai kulbir singh ji would say and once we start looking at the technicalities within gurbani as opposed to state of your mind ...we already lost the plot in sikhi as we are falling into same karam kaand many hindu pandits did which were condemned in Gursikhi !!! and No i m not talking about nitneem banis which has very important historical significance, but specially talking about this topic.!

It's very fine line difference between spontaneously following maryada, listening/reading gurbani which supposed to kill your doubts/sansa, purify your mind and engaging in karam kaand/dogmatic ritual- how do you know that you engaging in dogmatic ritual ? when you mind is still full of doubts, mind is not slowly becoming purified as one doing it for sake of doing it, just be honest with yourself,,watch yourself from eagle bird view/eye....you will know.!!
