Which anti-virus program to buy?

I recently bought laptop for my mom and i want to install a good anti-virus. I don't want to get free programs as her laptop usually ends up corrupted after a while. Is there any cheap (under 40$) anti-virus program that you can recommend?

The free Avira is brilliant and premium one must be even better, Its pretty cheap too.

Microsoft Security Essentials as mentioned isnt bad for a free package install it and use it while yuo decide if you want a "better" product. I use Kaspersky Internet Security seems to be be pretty good. Check out AV Comparitives, they test anti virus products and rate which ones actually work well.

NOD32 by ESET is also good and very lightweight so doesnt hog computer resources like memory and CPU.

i been using Kaspersky internet security from past3 years and its good ,

you can get a 3 pc key its more cheap and share with your friends

If its a Windows based machine, then I would first recommend MSE, I have never had a problem with this, all my machines run MSE.

If you want to buy something, then like the member above, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2012.
