CHANDIGARH: Gurdwara Waraich issue, over which Sikh radicals and followers of Dera Radha Soami had been at loggerheads for long, has been resolved. Burying the hatched on the occasion of ‘Viyay Dashmi’ that symbolises the victory of good over evil, the two warring factions have entered into an agreement. The move that came as a pleasant surprise has been taken keeping into account ‘peace of Punjab’ by the two opposing groups.

Members of the Sikh community had been opposing the dismantling of the gurdwara in Waraich village of district Beas by followers of Dera Radha Soami. In their fervent protest, the Sikhs had even gone as far as virtually boycotting head of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh.

The radicals who were opposing the gurdwara demolition by Dera followers mainly included Sikh panthic bodies Akali Dal Panch Pradhani, Simranjit Singh Mann-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Amrritsar), Khalsa Action Committee, Dal Khalsa, Damdmi Taksal and Panthic Sewa Lehar.

According to reports, some leaders from the radical Sikh groups met Gurinder Singh Dhillon, head of Dera Radha Soami. The details of the meeting are yet to be made public.

As per the sources, all the issues between the two groups have been resolved and the decision taken by the leaders of both the sects will be made public soon. However, an insider revealed that the Dera chief has offered to hand over the gurdwara to the Sikh religious bodies.

It is pertinent to mention that trouble between the two groups started brewing in July this year. The disputed piece of land on which a one-room gurdwara existed, belonging to the Panchayat, was sold to Dera Radha Soami sect without obtaining the mandatory approval from Director of Panchayats of Punjab Government. Tension mounted further after members of Dera Radha Soami sect allegedly destroyed a section of the gurudwara.

The situation threatened to snowball into a major communal tension. In order to control the same, heavy police force was deployed on the site to avoid any untoward incident. The Akal Takht had directed the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Commitee (SGPC) to form a three-member committee to probe into the land dispute between Sikh community and followers of Dera Radha Soami over the issue. Both the communities were asked to stay away from the land for a week while the SGPC conducted its probe.

Tension between the two groups was somewhat defused when on September 26, chief of Radhasoami sect Gurinder Singh Dhillon paid obeisance at the Golden Temple. Dhillon was even given a Siropa (robe of honour) by the priest sitting inside the sanctum sanctorum.
