'Hate crime' attack on Sikh family home on wedding day

Police say they are treating an attack on the home of a Sikh family whose daughter was about to marry a man from a different religion as a hate crime.

The door of the terrace house in Coventry was damaged and its windows were smashed early on Saturday.

The family members, who asked not to be named, said they were targeted because a daughter was due to marry a Hindu man in a Sikh temple later that day.

The wedding later went ahead peacefully, as planned.

The family said they had been threatened in the weeks leading up to the wedding by some "hardline" Sikhs, who were unhappy about non-Sikhs getting married in one of the religion's temples, known as gurdwaras.

They said the people had also made aggressive calls to the gurdwara where the wedding was due to take place.

'Very frightening'

The father of the family told BBC Asian Network that at about 01:30 BST on Saturday he heard the glass in the house's front windows shatter.

He said: "It went 'bang, bang, bang'. It was very frightening."

The family were given a police escort to and from the gurdwara for the wedding.

The bride's older sister said the family had been put through "some quite horrendous things" in the run-up to the wedding.

"Mixed faith marriages have been going on from the start," she said."What's the problem now?"

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "Police are investigating the criminal damage as a hate crime and are treating this as a priority.

"Police have had a presence at the address over the weekend and are continuing to support the family."

Just look at the jeevan of our most beloved 20th century mahaan sant sipahi, Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Jee Khalsa Bhindranwale. People talk about how much soorma jujhaaroo he was, they forget how much k

A personal attack such as this does nothing but give Sikhs a bad name....words like "extremist" and "fanatical". Ok so maybe the couple shouldnt have got married at the Gurdwara but theres other ways

as you can see, one of the miri piri nishan sahibs is slightly taller than the other. the tall one represents being a sant, the smaller one soldier. so a saint is more important than a soldier. althou

That's right...now sikhs cannot claim abroad they were victims of hate crime when we have our own fuddus committing hate crimes against our own. I am sorry for harsh language but every advait khalsa of sri guru gobind singh ji should be outraged at these mobs, you give these guys arm, they want the whole leg...i don't care which jatha/samparda/group they belong to..what is wrong is wrong..!!!!!

What is the problem if a person from non so called Sikh background meets the criteria of the Sandesh set by Akal takhat Ie has Singh/kaur in name on legal docs accepts Sikhism etc. has an anand karaj, they will actually most likely look into sikhi.

Whereas most weddings from Sikh background couples don't in some cases have a clue about sikhi or Singh/kaur in their name . Just cos there from punjabi Sikh background there is no issue.

smashing windows is wrong, but was is wrong with these tity gurdwara committees and tity sikh families. Just because a hindu has read a wikipedia page about sikhism, some how it is justifiable to break the 38th hukam of the Great King Satguru Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj, f-kin sikhs

Mrsingh12,

The sheer paradox of your argument beggers belief. After I pointed out that 9 out of 10 Sikh-Sikh weddings I have attended, (and thats being optimistic) do not satisfy hukam 38, you decide to tell me that as long as "God's Sikhi" is being practised then somehow according to you at least 'half of the hukam' is being followed. Had it not occured to you that hukam 14 states that "do not start married life without anand karaj" and also hukam 47 "life as a keshadhari Sikh"? Therefore, which type of "God's Sikhi" were you refering to? According to hukam 47, a mona wouldn't suffice anyway. The fact is, 9 out of 10 Sikh-Sikh weddings will not satisfy hukam 38 by any stretch of the imagination. I am flabbergasted that it has taken you until 2012 to realise that the 38th hukam is being dishonoured when it has been happening for the past 100 years or so.

Even if the hindu has only "read a page on wikipedia about Sikhism", it's still volumes of knowledge when compared to the thugs who smash a window and don't even have the guts to stand outside and say "here I am, I am accountable for my actions" like any honourable Sikh would have done. No, these thick criminal thugs have probably never even read that page on wikipedia on Sikhism themselves. Because if they had, they would have concluded that the pen is mightier than the sword and that rather than run away, all Sikhs are held accountable for their actions, right or wrong.

i would get the tone, i only found out until a few months ago that the 52 hukams even existed. Why dont you make your position clear, are you for or against inter-faith? If for, prove its legitimacy in sikh faith. I cant comment on why a person lives a life they do, but clearly being brought up in some kind of sikh surrounding, in a sikh family, will be a more palatable idea when it comes to marriage. A sikh-sikh wedding, even if the two sikhs don't follow the strict code of conduct, will certainly make the spiritual journey more easier than a sikh-hindu/muslim wedding.

I don't know why you have written the last five lines, as I have already condemned any window smashing in this incident.

I neither need nor want to read anything written on the 4 pages here. Fact of the matter is this:

If I, as a non Muslim, wanted to get married to a Muslim girl in a mosque.........I would not be allowed to do so.

If I, as a Sikh, wanted to get married in a Church or Cathedral.............I would not be allowed to do so.

If I wanted to get married in a Jewish Synagogue, the temple officials would first instigate a 4 month investigation into my mothers, mother's mothers, and mother's mother's mother's Jewishness before letting me do so.

Which brings us to us and our Sikh Gurdwaras. We have no extremist or unreasonable rule. We have the same rule as every church, mosque and synagogue in the world. The only difference is that we have, in control of our places of worship, uneducated idiots that know less about Sikhism than the average junior school child that has done a half term study of Sikhism.

It is written and prescribed that a non-Sikh cannot marry in a Gurdwara.....but still they do not listen.

We have politely said that a non-Sikh cannot marry in a Gurdwara.....but still they do not listen.

We have politely shouted to those hard of hearing that a non-Sikh cannot marry in a Gurdwara.....but still they do not listen.

Tell me....when prescription, talking and even shouting has not worked what alternative is there to the smashing of windows ? The only alternative is to take a dump on Sikhism and let them make a mockery of it.

Firstly can we at least say that there is no proof that the smashed window had anything to do with the wedding?

Why do we think and believe the worst? I don't know any Amritdhari that would smash a window because some family want to broadcast their besharm for the world to know by having an Anand Karaj. So let's lay off the fundo hate mob comments. From what I heard of the radio show, the girl's sister seems to the typical dumbo involved in these kinds of situations. You can tell what knowledge her family gave her about Sikhi and you can understand why her sister is marrying some Hindu if that is the way the family have raised them. Her attitude was typical, who are the 'extremists' to stop her sister having her 'dream' wedding ceremony! This is the attitude that the people fighting to implement the Akal Takht hukumnama are facing. I am surprised that she didn't come up with a death threat as is usual for people who know their position is untenable from the Sikhi point of view but want to buttress their position by playing the victim.

To be honest, I feel she is playing ignorant when she says that the Gurdwara never told her that her sister couldn't have an Anand Karaj. With all the publicity that happened when the incident took place in Swindon then I do not believe that her family didn't know about the Hukumnama.

I agree, who knows who did it? Could have been a family feud for all we know and there are plenty of those. Maybe some of their own relatives objected? Could have been ordinary hooligans etc.

What we need to be careful of is that as we saw in the Brar media coverage there are a few elements usually the old Communists and Congress types that are trying to stir up trouble for the Sikhs by labelling them as extremists on the orders of their masters. This happens a lot in Canada where the Sikhs are labelled extremists as the media was not challenged at early stages . The Gurdwara should follow the Sikh marayada and we should not get caught up in a trap to label as extremists.

Whilst agreeing with scenarios that there could be possiblity of relative smashing windows/communist type to make us looks extermist etc but equally there is quite bit of possiblity of low level street mobs/south hall rude boyz types who hide behind sikhi garb - find some cause use sikhi bana as platform to lash out violently against anyone who does not agree with them, but most importantly the later is already reported in national media - BBC outlet said it was work of sikh extermist, and there is nothing we can do to change that news except condemn the violence collectively as sikh community if not for wider khalsa ethics do it for sake of damage control.

We need to learn from muslim community mistakes, lack of condemnation in their community against extermist/fanatics elements in their community who were hijacking their dharam, landed them in lot of hot water in the media and media attitude towards muslims at larger is pretty evident and for everyone to see. And we are happily falling same traps then we wonder why media is so bias against us? Gee i wonder, when we have leaders walking around like arrogrant fools with sense of entitlement without condemning anything- what you think its going to happen?

Each one of us who follow actually guru maharaj sikhi sidhant which is truly against senseless violence against innocents by oppressors/ extermist, needs to get up and say- these fools who use violence against innocent don't represent us or our community- nail these hooligans to the wall. They can take their low level mob mentaliy and their loyalty back to violent black rappers. They don't represent sikhs..!!

At the end, don't care if its satkar committe or jatha satkar committe or samparda's jatha satkar committe, independent body needs to be created authorized by sri akaal takth ensure there is an transparency and accountablity within these groups. All it takes one rogue extermist thought/person ruining it for everyone..!!

Overall, in this anand karaj fiasco- non sikhs knowningly/unknowingly mocking sikh traditions such as anand karaj. We gotta look at the bigger picture- biggest culprits are committe members of the gurdwara itself and lack of parchar surronding anand karaj itself not the innocent couples who are gettin married. At under no circumstances, these families/bride and groom who are getting married should be intimidated by anyone- marriage is highly emotional/special day for them but rather committee members should be held responsible - they are the one who should we enforcing rules from sri akaal takth sahib, putting pressure as sangat to follow maryada from sri akaal takth sahib, and introduce policy surrounding anand karaj in the gurdwaras.

Direct intervention from sri akaal takth sahib jathedars is needed to strike a right balance for both parties, i just have a feeling $hit is about to hit the fan..this is going to get ugly. That's not how you win hearts and get people in sikhi- any human who feels they are being pushed into the corner intentionally/unintentionally regardless of whatever intentions may be, will revolt back ugly and in this case- go totally left wing- join comrades/communist types- causing more division and hostility within community. You guys can learn from sikhs in BC how media was able to cause imaginary divide between moderates and fundamtenalist and took advantage of whole suitation why? Because simply - we let them......!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, taking our cues from hot-headed elements of the Islamic community is absolute madness. Oh well, I guess it's been coming for a while now. Like I said a few months ago we're living up to expectations and fulfilling the role carved out for us by our enemies. The fact that none of these guys can see the end-game and the manipulations being cultivated by our enemies speaks volumes. Our ill-wishers line up the shot and we step up and hit it out of the park.

Strap yourselves in for the ride, Singhs and Singhnis, it's going to be a bumpy ride. A bit like when you're driving from Delhi airport to your respective pinds in Panjab.

Although, absolute shame on the Gurughar committees for not having the balls to do their job and enforce maryada. Their inaction ferments this kind of behaviour.

    • i wouldn't say it's based on war. Id say its based on how one should live their life according through those lenses. Is war apart of life? unfortunately yes it is. We have our way and they have their own, the only problem is that they have a supremacist attitude and treat minorities like <banned word filter activated>. Now they aren't the only ones that do this however in our history we have mostly been through this kind of thing by them then later on Christians. Today they are still a huge problem but an equally bigger if not worse problem is the liberalism bull being shoved our throats

    • I would highly recommend doing one thing at home. Once a week, pick any week, do kes ishnaan and make Kadah prasaad at home.  Many here may / may not agree with me, but make it according to Taksaal Maryaad is the best way as it's the traditional way of preparing it, going back to Guru Ji's time.  Nothing too difficult. Get Iron Kadahi (fryer) and iron saucepan (make sure it's NOT Non stick but classic or normal iron) 3 steel bowls (caulia). Butter, flour, sugar in equal measures. Pop equal measure of water per serving (so let's say five ingredients are 1kg that'll be 5kg water) in the saucepan let it boil on high heat first then low after adding sugar in the hot water. Then let butter melt in the kadahi before inserting flour, mix and keep on medium heat. IMPORTANT! At this stage start Japji Sahib the paat very, very slow. Then do Jaap Sahib. The flour mixture must go dark brown. Add the heated water mixture then stir until the mixture looks golden brown.  Cover the Kadahi with a white cloth and leave on a table placed with a cloth. As it's cooling down do Anand Sahib (40 Stanzas) then do Ardaas. Whatever you ask for your situation will become 1000 times better. After Ardaas and before distribution of Prassad to all family members, you can even do more Baanias over it (Chandi d vaar 5 times is favoured) this up keeps the degh and gives it an extra umph. However, Mool Mantar and Gurmantar too is good enough. Some will even get a steel thali and five steel bowls to take out for panj pyaare. This too must b covered with a white cloth. However, a few mins later the prasaad in the five caulia can be inserted back into the main bowl.  NOW the Prassad can b distributed to fam members, friends, colleagues etc etc.
    • Academic who tried importing child sex doll from China avoids jail after police found child abuse images on his computer following customs tip-off Malcolm Young was put on the radar of Northumbria Police buying the sex doll  61-year-old's purchase was intercepted by Border Force officials, raising alarm  Following an eight day long trial, a jury found Young guilty of all five counts  An academic has been caught with child abuse images after buying a child sex doll from China that looked like his ex-girlfriend. Tech professional Malcolm Young was put on the radar of Northumbria Police when he attempted to import the 3ft2, flat-chested doll, with clothing and accessories, in 2017. The 61-year-old's purchase was intercepted by Border Force officials who told detectives of their concerns about the package.     Officers visited Young's home in the East Woodburn area of Northumberland to question him about the doll and seized his computers and phone.   The electronics were reviewed and officers uncovered indecent images of children on his computer that Young had tried to delete. Young, of East Woodburn, Northumberland, was charged with four counts of making indecent images of children and one count of tax evasion, concerning the doll. He denied his guilt and tried to convince a jury at Newcastle Crown Court that he purchased the small doll, not based on its likeness to a child but because it resembled an athletic female body type. Prosecutor Graham O'Sullivan told the court: 'He said he had ordered a doll that looked like an ex-girlfriend, that he had cancelled, and had not ordered any child sex doll.' Young had also claimed that the deleted images found on his device were not his but may have been made by people visiting his home while attending parties. Following an eight day long trial, a jury found Young guilty of all five counts. The court heard the charges related to one Category A image, the most serious, two Category B and 35 Category C. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail, suspended for two years, and was ordered to carry out rehabilitation and has been subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Also, he must pay £9,480 prosecution costs. At his sentence hearing today, Christopher Knox, defending, said Young, who had been living in Spain and has a boat there, made his money through tech industries. But Mr Knox added: 'He has had a very successful career that has been totally destroyed. 'He won't be able to be employed by anyone ever again in the fields in which he has excelled.' Judge Stephen Earl sentenced Young to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with rehabilitation requirements. Young was even photographed with former Prime Minister who came to the opening of his company e-Therapeutics. The judge said Young had 'lost a lot', including a 'chancellorship at the University of Newcastle', due to his offending and added: 'His fall from grace is long and hard'. The judge added: 'This whole issue came to light as a result of the fact the defendant had ordered what can only be described as a child sex doll.' Judge Earl said Young had claimed in his defence he had not wanted a child sex doll and had cancelled what he ordered, which was a doll he 'wanted to look like Dawn, his former partner'. Young was even photographed with former Prime Minister who came to the opening of his company e-Therapeutics     The judge said Young had produced pictures of 'Dawn' during the trial, who was described as a 'small adult'. Detective Constable Alison Felton led the investigation for Northumbria Police and said after the conviction Young thought he was 'above the law'. She said: 'This has been a long and protracted investigation involving the making of indecent images and the importation of a child-like sex doll. 'We are committed to making sure that offenders are brought to justice, no matter who they are or however long it takes. 'Young thought that he was above the law. He has taken no responsibility for his crimes and the jury saw through the preposterous account he gave to the court.'   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10025733/Academic-tried-importing-child-sex-doll-China-avoids-jail.html
