~~ Bir Ras Vs Krodh/Anger~~~

I like to take this chance to open up discussion on difference between krodh vs bir ras. I think lot of sikhs confuse krodh attribute of human with bir ras. Krodh is one of panj chor which sikh suppose to control or rise above from.

Here is my take on it:

Krodh- Sheer anger invoked by raig (attachment), dvaish( animosity), intent of using unjustified force with intent of doing further collateral damage where innocent lives are lost/hurt.

Bir ras of Sipahi: Warrior spirit of self defense- stopping an individual to do further damage, fight against oppression but more importantly- bir ras is not on its own, its naturally born, nurtured and controlled by sant aspect of one's life- dya (compassion), sat(truthful), sabar( patience), santokh(contentment), sam/advait dristhi (non dual one vision impartial perception of humanity).

Bir ras is has the foundation of 'Love' as it is practiced for the love of dharm, truth and rightousness.

Whereas krodh has the foundation of hate mixed with ego and is rarely on the path of rightousness.

Can certainly be a slippery slope to distinguish between the two in the heat of the moment. Having the gift of hindsight is all too easy. Need constant vigilence and concentration to maintain spirituality.

I always compared bir ras to ' berserk' as in Viking history/literature, ppl who were unstoppable in battle, cause they had no fear, no sense of danger, just went after the enemies....

Gyani Sher singh video explaining sri guru gobind singh ji thoughts behind zafarnama to aurenzeb, made me revisit my stance regarding krodh and bir ras, let me look into krodh and bir ras more deeply inside me.

I think we all need to be honest with ourselves (myself included) and ask ourselves some very tough questions by exploring finest tat of Gurmat:

a) At which point one self defense/fight back/political-religious rhetoric/emotional highly charged speech start showing imprints of krodh as opposed to bir ras?

b) It's there any under pinning (if any) which under pins both krodh and bir ras and differentiates them clearly?

c) How does one reconcile gurbani updesh of "Bisar gayi sab tat praaie" with bir ras of destroying/stopping enemy outside?..for eg- how did those great singh warriors reconcile gurbani updesh of bisar gayi sab tat praie" when dealing with massa rangar, abdali etc?

In my opinion..i think without bhramgyan- ik advait avastha (one vision of truly seeing/feeling vahiguroo in everyone), one truly cannot have "bir ras" which gurmat talks about, that subtle elements of krodh will be always attached to it with individual soldier/sipahi aspect in SIkhi..in other words- sant aspect comes first and then sipahi aspect....!!

I think stopping enemy with compassion may be oxymoron or ironic for many but i really think- stopping/destroying enemy with compassion/dya really do exist in sikhi, in fact very foundation of sikh dharam is based on dya(compassion) such as- Dhaul Dharam dya ka poot, such as symbolic first panj pyara name - bhai dya singh ji. then bhai dharam singh ji, bhai himmat singh, bhai mokham singh, bhai sahib singh.
