January 1st is not the beginning of the New Year for Sikhs.

It is important to understand that according to Gurbani (Bara Maha Maajh Mahala Panjvan), our New Year Starts on March di Sangrand. Our Sikh calendar started 57 years prior to the English calendar, making this year's March di sangrand (March 14, 2013) the beginning of the year 2070.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji states in Raag Maajh on Ang 133 SGGS Ji: ''Chaeth Govind Araadhheeai Hovai Anandh Ghanaa''
In the month of Chaeth, by meditating on the Lord of the Universe, a deep and profound joy arises.

Our first month is Chaeth, not January. According to Gurbani our Sikh New Year starts in March on Sangrand. One need not look far to understand the logical reasoning behind this.

1. We have 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn (Fall) and Winter. The first season is Spring which starts in the month of March.

2. In Spring, roots are revived and nourished back to health. Trees start to grow their leaves back and everything becomes green and beautiful again. Thus, nature itself signifies when the New Year is beginning.

3. In Spring, the snow begins to melt and and through falls and rivers, starts making its way to reach its destiny in the Ocean.

4. The astrological signs cycle also starts in March with the sign of Aries.

People now you decide for yourselves when the actual New Year begins: in the depths of Winter in January, or the blossoming of new life in Spring in March on Sangrand.

In accordance with the Desi calendar, the first month of the year is called "Chaeth." In relation to the English calendar, this month is March. The current Christian calendar year is 2013. However, our calendar year begins 57 years prior to that, thus making this year 2070.

NOTE: This year on March 14, 2013 ''Sangrand'', it is 1st Chaeth 2070 (01-01-2070). This is when our Sikh new year begins.
