I would warn people see the film ...take the laaha of learning about sikhi but don't buy the tacky merchandise

Watched it last friday 7/11/14 first showing was only 6 others people and my family (4 ) total 10 and two of those were an elderly white couple , very emotional brought tears to my eyes and made the blood pump through my veins and fists clenched in parts.

We can never ever pay the debt we owe to them ! :respect: .

Went yesterday with the kids ,

excellent movie could have watched more... the full range of emotions was felt by the audience, even the small group of people watching joined in with jaikarey made the half-filled room seem full . The little one Isher Kaur was so enthralled , every time Guru ji's picture would come on screen she would exclaim 'it's Waheguru ji' I gently reminded her that it is Guru Gobind Singh ji but in a way my heart was happy she understood enough of what was going on. She was impressed with Ajit Singh ji and Jujhar Singh jis' bravery and skills kept smiling and saying wow.

Everyone was so involved in the storyline they didn't want to leave the room at the intermission, Bahadur Singh was so affected by the loss of Ajit Singh ji and Jujhar SIngh he didn't want to see the second half because he knew what was to come... his heart was totally with the Sahibzahidey. It is not a surprise to me that he feels that way, when he actually went to chotte sahibzahidey di shaheedi asthaan when he was small (6) with his two brothers both he and his twin Dayal Singh felt the injustice and loss deeply, they came out of Gurdwara Sahib exclaiming that they will grow up and kill all the muslims, obviously I gently explained that Gursikhs fight evil not muslims and those responsible were already long gone after getting punished.

Again this film touched his soul the same way and he was in tumult of emotions and thoughts at the end of the movie. Dayal Singh also felt this movie but seemed to understand that although they are physically not here, they are always here so although felt sadness wanted to know how the evildoers were dealt with and by whom so it was good in that he wanted to know more of sikhi itihaas.

My eldest Jaspreet Singh is in a funny mental space at the moment and even he connected with the story and the way it was told... All in all I would say you will go and never feel you have not connected from your hirdey to this film. The songs were few but very touching, and the dialogues also.

The fight scenes were bloodless so little ones will understand people are dying /getting hurt without scaring them. The animation sometimes goes out of sync with the dialogue and some aspects of the animation could have been improved but those things were minor because the subject matter was so intense. Take your kids, your bajurg, your neighbours , everyone they will all benefit.

Another update...

My Mum took her vaddi Daughter-in-law(Punjaban to max , wanted to destroy sons' sikhi saroop) and her two Pothey on Tuesday night . These kids know zip about itihaas and can only talk about games, games, games , older one is 13, younger is 8 and hyper hyperactive (unable to sit still).

Mum says the younger one Ajit Singh did not move a muscle, say a single word for duration of the film ,he was so into the movie and the older grandson Surjit Singh also . They came out of the movie totally into what they had seen , even Bhabhi ji had a good cry and said that from now itihaas should be made available in films like this. I hope that this will mean she will encourage Surjit Singh back into tabla and not harangue him for wanting to. (Surjit Singh learnt to play tabla by watching kirtaniya including Bhai Jeevan Singh ji on videos at Mum and Dad's he could play at two years old and loved to do naam japp but his Mum hated this)

Mum said that she loved the movie and felt that it would help a lot of the youth reconnect with Guru ji.

Went with 30 or so Sangat and family for the 3D. Every show is getting sold out and had to get to the theater about 45 minutes early to get a seat (a lot of saving of the seats was going on). The theater employees are very aware that this movie is attracting a lot of viewers and have had to modify their showing methods (converting non 3D viewings and now looking at booking larger theater rooms) to accomodate the influx of viewers. The cinema staff say that this movie will be running at least for 3-4 weeks - it is profitable and very much popular among the viewers. I am saying this as a California resident.

The movie is the highest production value animated movie that relates to Sikh history. Vismaad had done an excellent seva in starting this initiative and the trek into 3D is a very welcome evolution.

This movie is an absolute must for all, especially those who know nothing about Sikhi. It presents the story as lucidly and cohesively as possible in the time frame alloted. It is a challenge for the makers of this movie, because what they are attempting to show in 2 hours could take up volumes of history books. They openly provided the disclaimer that artistic license was taken to enhance the story telling. That cannot be underscored.

Anyone who is familiar with Sikh history will see inaccuracies with certain things: A) Mata Gujri's portrayal as a weak grandmother - this has been covered here already. She is the wife of the Ninth Master, Mother of the Tenth Master and Grandmother to Shaheed Sahibzadae - a woman who had seen three generations pass before her, multiple conflicts and tragedies and was of the highest caliber of Sikhi - she would not be an emotional weakling, to say the least. B) Sahibzadae Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh Ji were, per historical accounts, able to slay hundreds of the enemy in Chamkaur Sahib battle, not the tens as shown (this could be an animation cost and effort issue). C) Emotional portrayal - would the Guru's family become so emotional over separation and imminent Shaheedi? If Gursikhs from the 1984 movement were able to do jaikarae and celebrate their family members' Shaheedian, then the Guru's family could be no less. These seem to have been done to make a more human connection with the viewer, but portraying them all true to character would not have been any less impactful.

Apart from the few issues noted above, the overall effort is EXCELLENT - and truly, these are growing pains. I am writing this as constructive criticism must go hand in hand with accolade to make the next effort more successful and acurate. The makers of the movie deserve to profit massively from this creation and should be encouraged to make a movie on all of Sikh history, enhancing production values as they continue their efforts. The movie media is something that can deliver hundreds of pages of history in a compressed time format to a universal audience with dubbing/captioning that books are unable to do. These are our history come to life, and the Sikh Panth needs to encourage, fund, and promote these initiatives. We need to get to Lord of the Rings type production values and scope/exposure to bring our history to the masses. It cannot be underscored the power of the media - the independence movement of Scotland in modern times owes at least part of its roots to Braveheart. We as a community need to capitalize on this media power.

I think the perfect next project would be a film covering post Sahibzahidey through to SIkh misls because so few people talk of this period and most people are unaware just how amazing Sikhs were at this time. The fact that the two ghalugharas will be part of that will give sikhs the mental fortitude to understand it has happened before and the Sikh still rose like phoenixes.

The more I read, the more desperate I get to watch it. Any idea about DVDs coming out in USA or even in India?

I saw it a few days ago. Cinema was packed and I don't think the theatre staff had any idea what kind of demand for this movie there would be.

I'll be honest, I initially didn't want to go because I expected another low quality, badly directed melodramatic Indian film. My wife talked me into it and I'm so glad she did. It was beautifull. The animation quality is as good as Shrek and I wouldn't be surprised if it had a similar budget. This is top quality.
