Milk represents purity and cleanliness. Milk comes from cows, which are peaceful animals for the most part. Milk is viewed as a valuable product, especially in India where poverty is almost everywhere. Especially in the olden days, I'm pretty sure it wasn't available to everyone.

Milk is a sign of royalty/special treatment.

Milk is also used to bathe. Egyptian queens bathed in milk for example. Some woman do so to this day as well once in a while. Some woman wash their face with milk daily.

The Darbar Sahib floors are marble if I am not mistaken. Some people say use milk to clean marble, some say don't. Some say milk is acidic, some say it's not.

My fabricator used 511 and sealed it before installation. I then resealed it twice before actually using it. We have no stains thus far, but do have the inevitable etching. I have been using the marble since Oct., and have been careful but not manic about it. I wash it with a soapy cloth, use a barrier with acidic liquids like milk, or tomato juice, and use common sense with the kids school projects. I love it and feel it lends a warm touch to the kitchen.

Lucypwd, it kind of scares me to hear that you have to use a barrier with things like milk! Do you feel like you are just doing it out of abundance of caution, or do you have some bad experience when not doing it? Just trying to allay my fears

LOL, I didn't realize milk was acidic! We made strawberry ice cream last week and put too much into the ice cream maker and it overflowed onto the countertop. It sat there for a while too. I didn't notice any etching, but like I mentioned before, you really have to be looking at the right angle under bright light to see them.

FWIW, a number of online sources quote the pH of fresh cows' milk at 6.7, which is very close to completely neutral, not appreciably acidic. I'd be very surprised if milk etched marble. A grapefruit sorbet might be a very different situation.

Yes, I use place mats out of an abundance of caution. I don't know why I thought that milk was acidic. I guess it is technically slightly acidic. At any rate, still love the marble.

Traditional remedies

Avoid traditional remedies. They often rely on a strong alkali which will affect the surface of the marble itself rather than just removing dirt - the longer it is left on, the more likely it will damage the marble surface.

One 19th-century remedy suggests that discoloured marble should be treated using a mixture of equal parts of soft soap, quick lime and caustic potash. The mixture was applied with a brush, left on the marble for several days and then wiped off. The same source recommended polishing using a mixture of soda, pumice and chalk, or simply using milk.

Using milk is never appropriate because the residues that will inevitably be left behind are acidic in themselves, will encourage mould growth and attract dirt. Traditional cleaners containing vinegar or lemon juice can have a similar unwanted effect.

If you have stains on marble, you can try covering the surface with salt. Wipe off and reapply if stain is still there. If this doesnt work, you can also try covering the salt with milk, leave it for a few days and then wipe off.

To clean a polished marble, you need a specialised cleaning product. If not polished, sponge with a soapflake solution, then dry with a towel. If the marble is stained, sprinkle salt on the stain, and the salt should soak up some/all of the stain, and you can brush it off later. If this doesnt remove the stain after a few attempts, soak the salt in a little sour milk and leave for as long as you can. This should help remove the stain, if not, you would need a proffesional!!!

Must admit, i use a weak solution of water and my normal washing powder, to clean my marble fireplace, i always dry it off straight away and it comes up fine.

If the stain is on the upright part (and washing hasnt helped) i think i would make a milk/salt paste and pat on, and would leave it for a good few hours. Have just read in my household hints book, that you can clean a marbled top table with diluted vinegar or lemon juice, and must be washed off quickly with warm water. Ive never tried this, would worry about not rinsing it off quick enough, but might be worth a try!!!

milk is given respect because when a child is born its main form of sustenance is the mothers natural milk,

this is why milk is seen as pavitar and to clean darbar sahib with milk is giving it the highest form of respect, that a king of the universes throne room deserves such respect, it is paying respect to Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Isn't it a bit of a waste though? That milk could be given to poor people who are starving. I think guru sahib would prefer that rather than people using it to clean him.

Looking from sikhi humanitarian perspective- We do miss an chance to serve humanity when hundreds of litres of milk goes in drain every day when they clean the floor in darbar sahib - i be the last one to criticize sane puratan maryada but this one i have to say, they should use balance approach when it comes using milk- we should have fine balance between devotion shown towards sargun saroop of vahiguroo- dhan dhan dhan sri guru granth sahib ji and serve humanity as guru maharaj nirgun saroop also resides in humanity as sargun saroop..there are plenty of sakhi of guru maharaj giving tarnas to sikhs for wrapping their head around dogmatic notions so much so that sikhs not being able to see tat gyan essence- same jot of vahiguroo in everyone.!!!.

I think generally speaking danger arises when perception of individual surrounding devotional sargun ritual start having dogmatic notions or wrapping their head around it, so much so to the point that perception itself becomes road block in sikhi and so much so that its ultimately on clash course with gurmat humanitarian aspect in sikh...thats where danger lies..!!

Again nothing wrong with act of washing of darbar sahib with milk itself from devotional perspective , danger lies at the perception of individual for not having right balance not the act itself....this is where missionaries are dead wrong, they have start doing khandan mandan of very helpful/devotional/paramparic/symbol acts/rituals itself rather than exploring the perception of individuals surrounding the rituals.

No ritual or act needs to be changed, only people perceiving or turning devotional rituals/act into dogmatic notions/dogma road blocks in their head, need to be addressed as caution politely in the parchar thats all.
