I want to cut my hair

the problem I see from some of the people finding it difficult to keep kesh in this topic - it's the fact they see sikhi as a religion like goray do, instead of being a learner of sikh panth as a dharma. When sikh tradition is done as dharam istead of religion, there is a big change in mentality.

Learning from Guru instead of religion. Remember, sikh is a learner. Sikhs don't practise sikhi, they DO sikhi....

It makes you a bad person in the eyes of our guru jees. Rest of the world might be cool or chill. We need to decide to whom we should please - majority of world or guru sahib ji.

So you have a dictator

Cutting your hair isn't to please the world

It's to feel like your own person without being controlled by a dictator

No one should choose how to live just based on pleasing one person

People in abusive relationships also live according to their partners while feeling horrible because of the things that their partners makes them do

Thankfully America is a free country where people have basic human rights

Guest Anonymous,

I am not sure what your age is but im guessing you are in teens. You have full right to do anything in this country, you can cut your hair or go bald or drink, smoke or do any other stuff. You are free to do so and nobody here is forcing you to do anything and blurting out our dharam as cult or dictatorship is bit harsh and childish name-calling. I agree to disagree with you. In our dharam, we bend ourself to reach Waheguru not the other way around. People are good in bending religion in order to suit their lifestyle BUT that does not change our rehat maryada set by our Guru sahib.

Good Luck with your life !

Do the 3 Naam Jap, Vand shakh and kirat kar

I've known a few that were cutting hair but continued with the 3 pillars of sikh. Over time, and as they continued living and doing 3 with pyar, they ended up making their own minds and keeping hair.

It comes automatically from within after clearing doubts.

I have worn a turban alll my life and have hated most of it. I find as though it gets in the way of my every day life such when playing sports it tends to fall off my head and if I do have it tight on my head I tend to feel dizzy and in unable to play team sports properly such as rugby and football which makes my teammates very pissed with me and has also led my to failing to get onto the school team. I live in community in which I have people pointing and staring at me ,and calling me names like "rag head" or sly comments like "I have your head gets better" or even when I wear my patka people on the street call me "pirate". I am suffering from depression and social anxiety in which has lead me to having no friends. I am often extremely angry with my life and often think 'why me' , why have I been made to wear a turban against my own free will, isn't it violating my human rights that I have to wear thus thing on my head to please my dads wishes and not be my self. I'm currently 15 years old and don't beleive in religon at all (I personally think that its all garbage). for these reasons I want to cut my hair I personally know that I will fit into society better with my hair cut. but don't post anything about the gurus and sikhism in response to this post because i allready know anout it all. do you really think that god woild be pissed off about me cutting my hair, do you really think that god would care about such a petty thing. the main reason why I am posting this is because I don't know how I would ask my dad for permission to cut my hair and my mum is the only sane person in my family because she is the one that will let me do it I've asked her and she said yes but I need to ask my dad if its ok for me to do so.

You need a thappad of panj or chittar of panj basharm.

unfortunately, most of the world cuts their hair as a sheep mentality, because everyone else does it.

Look at America, USA. the actual natives didn't cut their hair. The European christian invaders did cut their own hairs. You see the pattern? I would say colonialism also influenced people into cutting their hair more. In India/Bharat, many people used to keep turbans, not just sikh. But the gulami/ slave-mentality increased during colonial rule.

The Gurus taught sikhs to be self-automonous, to wear turbans on heads like kings, and not be treated as lower castes who were refused turbans. Also to wear double turbans, or dumallas against the rules of the islamic rulers who were banning turbans for non-muslims. A sikh should have a warrior and non-slave mentality. Be non-conformist.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
