I don't think india had any specific dog breed thingy like germans did back in days. Majority of apnay and indians dislike pets and sadly they see dog as a dirty living creature. The only famous and dear dog of india is probably pomeranian lol..

If I am not mistaken, most of the dogs we see today are inventions/cross breeding of early and mid 19th century... like german tax collector made doberman for protection in early 19th century.. one of the dog breed used for cross breeding for dobies can only be located in extinct list. Lab retrievers also came in early 19th century... So my top guess is that dogs of earlier times are gone.. I think work dogs like huskies are probably the oldest living breed because of human dependence on its use as sled dogs up in north.

I saw the old painting of ranjit singh time where his fauj were riding horses, elephants, foot soldiers and i think i did saw few dogs in that picture but they don't look like tamed one (slim figure)..

Do you have a pic of this painting ?

Apparently this dog called a bully <banned word filter activated> is an ancient breed of India that Alexander the Great and xerxes of Persia had exported from India. Not sure how far it's true as I haven't seen any sources to confirm. From what I've heard is the most pure version of this breed is in Pak Punjab because the India side didn't care much for the purity of the breed.

Some old paintings show pointer type dogs.

Lots of Bully type dogs in Malwa and around Sirsa, they are used for fighting and their puppies can be more expensive than the imported breeds.

There are also breeds bought over by the English during the Raj such as the English Bull Terrier. These still have features similar to the original breed as opposed to what the breed has become in the rest of the world.
