I am related to a kharkoo who occasionally appears on Sikh and Sangat Tv.

He was and still is of the type that is against any form of music unless its dharmik.

There were some questionable and worrying things occuring from the apparently "proper" kharkoos (i.e. non-Black Cats) that left many wondering who exactly they were protecting the people from. I've heard from some of the old timers at my Gurughar when I was a kid about beatings, humiliation, and blackmail of wedding "baraats" of the common man being a regular occurence, so much so that people began to fear that this carry-on is what a potential Sikh state would be like if such people ever gained power. Like you said there's an aspect of the rose-tinted thing when looking back and romanticising such figures and the struggle for freedom.

Alot of those were stories made up to spread fear iv even heard of one tale were kharkus supposedly cut a girls hair because she was walking to school with pig tails the brahmins obviously didnt do there homework about sikh before making that one up lol

Heard about the weddings. Also all music and dance was banned. Becharey the likes of Jazzy and co would of been skint.

Music and dance wasn't banned. Just big weddings and dowry was. I have wedding videos of relatives from tarn taran, amritsar, gurdaspur and there are people dancing in the wedding. Simple weddings were promoted so it wasnt a big financial burden on the girl's family.

Veerji i dont know who is telling you these things but no one banned music. I know because my relatives in tarn taran, amritsar and gudaspur areawhich was considered the mecca of militancy due to its border location(you being jandialvi probably know this). I have marriage videos of relatives who married during the 80s in that area and in it they have band baja, dance, music. Now what was banned is dowry, big marriages, drinking of sharab etc things which caused over burdan on the brides family.

Gurdas Mann and Manaks greatest hits were from they 80s and they were not dharmic songs. Manak also sang some good dharmic songs, most notably his massa rangar album during this time because there was a huge audience wanting to listen to patriotic sikh songs.

It is only now after militancy died down that patriotic sikh songs are again being sung due to its demand.

People where told by the kharkoos NOT to play music at weddings. You may beg to differ but thats your problem not mine as i know it as fact.

Jandialvi veer, it just isnt true. Who ever has told you this has not been very honest with you as far as facts are concearned. People danced and had music playing in their weddings during the 80s. People like to do all sorts of gap shaps, but gap shap should always be taken with a pinch of salt.
