Dear Khalsa Ji,

Anyone know of a good host for hosting a large Sikh related website?

We were looking at Google AppEngine, since we would prefer the option of Java hosting. Are there any others(other than Amazon EC2) that anyone could recommend?

We have also looked at GoDaddy for general webhosting, does anyone have experience of using them?

It really depends on what your website will be about. If it is text based then any hosting is okay. There are 2 types of hosting; Linux based and windows based. Linux based got Cpanel and windows type got the plesk panel. I believe that 90% of the hosting are Linux based.

Take a look at www.HostGator.com and make sure that your plan offers cpanel which is basically a front end where you can add subdomains, email address, forwarding, scripts like wordpress, joomla etc. Cpanel makes job bit easier. Godaddy is also a good choice (use coupons from retailmenot.com). I used both companies and they are good.

Any plan should not cost you over $10 a month if your website will be more about text rather than video/audio stuff.

Try getting an ultra cheap 1-year signup for a few dollars to play with the linux-based hosting (Cpanel admin UI). Here's one (google deal sites for more):

If you find it works for your needs, cpanel may be the way to go. There are hundreds of hosting providers to choose from, all very affordable.

If on the other hand you need the advanced application and admin capabilities of Google App Engine or Amazon Web Services, those two are highly reliable and well-supported options.

For AWS, you can apply for an Amazon Educational Grant. Here's how: sign up for an online course (Coursera.org or Udacity.com for example) that uses cloud services or web programming. Then use that course name to apply for a grant here: http://aws.amazon.com/education/terms/

Amazon will give you a $100 grant in AWS credits very quickly, good for atleast two years. This will help you get familiar with AWS and decide if that's the route you prefer.
