JALANDHAR: After filing a civil suit against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a US court and and securing summons for her, the US-based rights groups Sikhs For Justice has now written to US President Barack Obama, urging him to ask Prime minister Manmohan Singh during their summit on September 27 regarding continuous impunity extended by his government to Congress Party leaders who were involved in genocidal attacks on Sikhs during the November 1984 riots.

In its communique to Obama, SFJ has cited the names of Union minister Kamal Nath and former Congress MPs, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Stating that they have been enjoying seats in the parliament instead of being prosecuted despite ample evidence of their involvement in organizing violence against Sikhs during 1984.

The letter has also reminded Obama administration of its response to Sikh Genocide Petition tabled before the White House in December 2012 with more than 45,000 signatures, in which US government acknowledged the systematic violence against Sikhs, by stating that, "During and after the 1984 violence, the United States monitored and publicly reported on the grave human rights violations that occurred and the atrocities committed against members of the Sikh community". Condemning November 1984 killing of Sikhs, the response had noted that "We continue to condemn — and more importantly, to work against — violence directed at people based on their religious affiliation".

SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said that since PM Manmohan Singh headed the government of the party which orchestrated the 1984 violence which had been acknowledged by the White House, the Sikh community had approached President Obama to raise the issue of impunity and denial of justice during his meeting with PM Singh. "We want to hold the perpetrators of 1984 and their protectors, accountable before the international community for their crimes against humanity," added Pannun.

Meanwhile SFJ also announced to hold a justice rally in front of White House during Obama - Singh meeting on September 27 . "The rally is aimed at exposing the incessant policy of impunity practiced by PM Singh's government towards the perpetrators of November 1984 Sikh genocide. The rally is supported by Sikh organizations and management committees of Gurudwaras across the United States and Canada," Pannin informed.
