When Did Your Family Become Sikhs

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering, do any of you have any idea when your family first became Sikhs?

Mine became Sikhs at the time of the 7th guru. Guru Har Rai Sahib came to my pind. He stopped off with an army before heading off to Kartarpur Sahib.

I don't know how accurate this story is but I was told my some old people, they said that the Guru came to the pind and wanted to stay there. Some villagers refused and turned them away. Then some villagers went after the Guru and asked them to come back. Then the Guru is said "those who came back will stay and the ones who didn't will go away from this pind". Don't know if this story is true, but its the one I was told.

So I was just wondering if anyone else knew how their family became Sikh.

Interesting - I've always wondered about this. I know we've been Sikhs from the time of Guru Gobind Singh/ creation of the Khalsa, but cannot be certain if there was any following prior to that period. I found this out by tracing my lineage through jamabandis at the tehsil office and noting when the names were more Sikh sounding and ended in Singh continously from one generation to the next. However I am also aware that a lot of Jats in the Doaba area converted en masse during the time of Guru Hargobind, but we have no particular story or village association with one particular event or time supporting this.

I really want to know now, that's a great question.

I would like to think for quite some time. I know I'm from the same clan as Akali Phoola Singh, I heard many were sufis prior to Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji so I would like to think around the time of the first Gurus?

I don't have a clue.

I have my suspicions about what we were prior to being Sikhs, and I'll tell you it rhymes with "Uslim".

My ancestors must've been the ones that saw the light. :lol2: Fair play to them for that!

LOL Jokes.

It's all good One Luv bruthaa innitttttttt.

Very hard to go all the way back to guru jees time but however i am managing to find some interesting things about my ancestors.. Last week I found that my nana jees maternal parents side came directly from Baba Bir Singh.. i can't go deep into my fathers side as i haven't explored it yet but my father do tell me many years ago that his great parents used to visit harmandir sahib and they always had a room/place right on the parkarma of sri harmander sahib. I am not sure what that meant but my top guess is that back in days different clan/misls/sardars had such places reserved/built by them around inner complex of harmandir sahib. My singhni can trace her family link all the way back to guru sahib jees time.

Sadly, all my grandparents passed away.. if you still have your grandparents of early 1900's century then i would suggest you to spend some time and go into deep conversation with them and record them before its too late.

Nothing to be ashamed of bro. The first generation of Sikhs in Guru Nanak Dev Ji's lifetime were originally 50% Muslim and 50% Hindu. Plus Bhai Mardana Ji.

It's only when the Mughals got really scared of so many Muslims becoming true montheists in Sikhi that Hindu converts to Sikhi began to outnumber Muslim converts to Sikhi particularly after the Shaheedi of Guru Arjan Dev Ji because Prophet Muhammad and Islam say that anyone who dares to leaves this Arabic religion of Islam should be killed.

This would just show when your ancestors became Amritdhari Sikhs because the ones prior to 1699 would have had Hindu or Muslim names. Jamabandis are an interesting way of doing ancestry research.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
