Chaupai

If he does not take bath in cold water,

And without reading Jap Ji Sahib, takes his food,

Without saying Rehras, passes the evening,

Without reciting Kirtan (Sohila) goes to sleep,

Through slander he conducts his affairs,

Cursed is his birth if he forgets the righteousness.

Dohira

Nand Lal, listen to this speech, the Sikh conduct is this,

Without the celestial name, charity and bathing, a Sikh should not savour food.

This is from tankanahama.

Yes no dispute regarding this rehat, bhai sahib ji never suggested to fast either. It's a very slippery slope. Singh559 posted gurbani tuk in the earlier page which gives cautionary warning to those who wrap their head around fasting and other rituals and idolize them to the point where it falls into starving/fasting and falls into dogmatic notions. Bhai nand lal ji tankhanama and gurbani quote are not contradictory but updesh at different stages just like muslim- according to gurbani updesh- sikhs also have shariat, tariqat, marfat and hakikat levels or stages (also known as dharam, gian, saram, karam, sachkhand - stages in anand karaj and among many indictions of stages in gurbani). But unfortunately, (takhanama, gurbani tuk) been made out to be or appear to be two clashing points on a clash course and that is done when we don't look at things from context of stages if thats the way it is then without question for me atleast- gurbani mahavak takes precedence over it as gurbani gives tat nichor(hakikat/essence) of everything- shariat, tariqat and marfat all put together.!!!

Here is gurbani mahavak again:

ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥

Pilgrimages, fasts, purification and self-discipline are of no use, nor are rituals, religious ceremonies or empty worship.

O Nanak, emancipation comes only by loving devotional worship; through duality, people are engrossed in duality. ||2||

I guess million dollar question should be - What constitutes as fast? It's slipperly slope when mind/body is conditioned over a period of time by using hatt/force to perform certain principle by force despite of one is naturally hungry/body naturally needs food/fuel then its a fast with duality gurbani is talking about. The key word here is despite of one body is naturally hungry. We are talking about beginner, medium, intermediate stages here not advance stages ajapa Jaap, dasam dvar or nirvakalap samadhi...This discussion of neither fasting or not fasting does not apply to them. We are having good vichar here, i learned one view point or way of looking at from johnny earlier today that one didn't eat before nitneem by looking at some of jevan of puratan singhs in the past. Thats a valid way of looking at it, one of way looking at it, but overall we have to look at the topic from all angles regarding a topic if we wish to talk about it in its totality.

I think waiting for 20-25 minutes to eat until after you finish your morning nitnem hardly qualifies for a fast. Fast is for hours and even days, a few minutes is not a fast. If today's Sikhs are so hungry that they cannot even wait for a mere 25 minutes until after Nitnem then what more can be said about our Panth's decapitated state.

Fully agree on 25 mins hardly is considered warm up let alone fasting

What a guy! Guru Govind Singh ji gave us rehit and this guy wants to break it. Why wud u wana break rehit to help do paath, what use is such paath wen it is dun without rehat (ie food before nitnem)?? Guru knows more than a sikh! the BHOOKE BHAGAT NA KEEJAI pangti cannot be used here. Thats lyk using RAJ RAJ BHOJAN KHAAVAHU MERE BHAI for pizza! wen maharaj says eat less.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
