LANGAR MAKING US FAT ?

there is no limit to the amount of love and kirpa that can go into the preparation of karah prasad degh and langar degh

however ....

is there a limit to the amount of butter, sugar and salt?

it seems that we have totally shifted away from the traditional "simple meal" and now there are people who even CATER their "langar" for special "keertans"

it confuses and disappoints me that we are getting more towards having convenience and being fat, than having opportunities to do seva and being healthy.....

before we start this topic i just want to say this is nothing against langar or degh in general - i believe both are great - and guru sahib created them for a reason. i just think that reason has been lost in our modern society.

Yes, I think it makes you fat.

I don't think they know how much oil is healthy, or how much sugar, salt is good for the sangat. As we all know langar is made in bulks, and not for only 4-5 people, so its really hard/time consuming to measure how much oil, salt, sugar, carbs is really good for you.

We need to have a sheet of how much oil, etc. we can put, and also measuring cups, rather than spilling the whole peepa of oil into the karahi.

I was thinking about this issue this morning. Indian food in general is made for the diet of a labourer. Think about the origins and the people who ate it. They worked all day long and often needed the food just to balance their lifestyle.

Here the lifestyle is different, most have jobs where heavy labour is not required. The idea, i think, is to work out so you can balance that type of food.

As for langhar, I know one bibi at Dixie rd. Gurughar who "administers" (for lack of a better word) the prep and making of the langhar. There is also one uncle jee/baba jee who makes the atta everyday, all the time. With experience they probably know how to make the food more healthy. Although I don't know if they are concerened with making the food healthy or just getting it made period.

Its Guru Ka Langar man, why stress if it will make u unhealthy or not, thats pure stupidness.. just trust that whatever you eat from gurus house. Worry about being healthy in your lifestyle and meals you eat outside of gurdwara. At the gurdwara theres no need to worry, guru ji will take care there, we are eating his food there. and dont even question that

I personally think that Langar itself has changed since when it was instituted.

Nowadays, we have a 7 course meal including 2 daals, 2 saabji's, with Jalebi AND Keer. Sometimes I've seen TWO types of Parshaadae.

I think the idea in the beginning was not about how COMPLEX we can make the meals but how we can bring people together. I personally think the complexity of the meals today is not good for the sangat.

I think that if we continue to have a 7 course meal as langar then nutrition WILL be an issue. I highly doubt in Guru Sahib's time if Langar consisted more than one daal a saabji and something else.

I think it's time we cutback on the lavish Langars that we hold and just focus on simplicity.

Balwand says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a noble woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade to all.

She distributes the bounty of the Guru's Langar; the kheer - the rice pudding and ghee, is like sweet ambrosia.

(Bhatt Sathaa & Balvand, Raag Raamkalee, 967).

Even in the times of Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji, there was delicious Kheer which was made with ghee. (Mmmm...Kheer... :lol: ...must...focus...). It is us that have slowed down...don't blame the Langar.
