I Am That - Amazing Spiritual Book

Recommended Posts

Just came across this book ....so far found it second only to SGGS, very interesting and enlightening read , if you haven't taken a look , please do - its a complement to our regular study of SGGS.

excerpt -

Q: Yet, I cannot see how can anything come to be without a cause.
M: When I say a thing is without a cause, I mean it can be with-out a particular cause. Your own
mother was needed to give you birth; But you could not have been born without the sun and the
earth. Even these could not have caused your birth without your own desire to be born. It is desire
that gives birth, that gives name and form. The desirable is imagined and wanted and manifests
itself as something tangible or con-ceivable. Thus is created the world in which we live, our personal world. The real world is beyond the mind's ken; we see it through the net of our desires,
divided into pleasure and pain, right and wrong, inner and outer. To see the universe as it is, you
must step beyond the net. It is not hard to do so, for the net is full of holes.
Q: What do you mean by holes? And how to find them?
M: Look at the net and its many contradictions. You do and undo at every step. You want peace,
love, happiness and work hard to create pain, hatred and war. You want longevity and overeat, you
want friendship and exploit. See your net as made of such contradictions and remove them -- your
very seeing them will make them go.
Q: Since my seeing the contradiction makes it go, is there no causal link between my seeing and
its going?

I have read parts of it, this along with talks with maharishi was first recommended to me by by knowledgeable taksali samparda gyani. It's beautiful. Contents of it is same as puratan samparda literature such as Adhyatam parkash, vichaar sagar, vichaar mala.. But this is good text who doesn't have good grasp of indic languages - punjabi, sadhu, hindi, braj basha etc as it's translated in English and it's very profound doesn't loose itself in translations

Good book. Just looked at my highlights from this book. His teachings are in line with Ramana Maharishi. Self inquiry and Advait. He does not stress bhakti , simran etc saying that you are already that but does give some very satisfying answers to the phenomenon of consciousness. He keeps insisting that you are not body, mind etc but one of his students ask if your are not body why do you keep smoking. He said his body keeps some habits. Some of his students took up smoking since their guru was smoking.

Another great excerpt

Q:
But can one step out of the world?
M:
Who was born first, you or the world? As long as you give first place to the world, you are bound
by it; once you realise, beyond all trace of doubt that the world is in you and not you in the world,
you are out of it. Of course your body remains in the world and of the world, but you are not deluded
by it. All scriptures say that before the world was, the Creator was. Who knows the Creator? He alone who was before the Creator, your own real being, the source of all the worlds

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
