Tarlochan Singh urges PM to help Sikh farmers in state

Tarlochan Singh, former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, on Friday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's help in ensuring that Sikh farmers in Haryana were not "ousted" by the state government, following the end of their 50-year lease for tilling.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, he urged him to step in and convince the state government against ousting them.

"We are thankful to you for showing concern for the Sikh farmers in Gujarat, who, after 50 years of farming, have been ousted," Tarlochan wrote.

"The plight of Sikh farmers in Haryana is much more serious and painful. You remember sir, when you visited Pehowa during an election tour, this particular case of the Sikh farmers in that area was brought to your notice and you, very graciously, announced that they will not be ousted and the Haryana chief minister will take necessary action to protect their rights," he wrote.

Tarlochan said 3,500 Sikh families in Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts, who were occupying and tilling the land for the past 55 years, have been ousted forcibly.

"As you are aware, on the advice of the central government, Sikh farmers were given barren lands on lease for making them fully fertile in Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar, Haryana and Gujarat," he explained.

"After the expiry of lease in Haryana, the Sikh farmers were forcibly told to quit. For years, they were fighting in court, and ultimately the Supreme Court decided that legally they can't be owner of that land, but the Haryana government shall make provisions to allow them to cultivate the lands," said Tarlochan, who is also a senior sports administrator.

"I may bring to your notice that only last month at Krah Sahib village, Sikhs were made landless with the help of police. Some villages where the Sikhs are still occupying the land, the authorities have cut the power supply to harass them," he said.

He said: "But, these poor farmers are denied protection under the existing law that says that any farmer who has been occupying the land for 15 years cannot be ousted. But, these farmers, who were there for 50 years, are not being given any help."

"I request you to kindly advise the Haryana government to show magnanimity to those who have turned barren land into to a prosperous and fertile area," he added.

Sikhs have been treated as second class citizens of India since 1947. Sikhs have been used and thrown away, wheter its in the wars against Pakistan or turning their barren lands into breadbaskets.

S. Trilochan Singh continues to do a good job, altough I wish there were more committed Sikhs with such qualifications. I again stress on the need of practising Sikhs to get into IPS, IAS (police, advocates, ...) in India and politics in countries like Canada (on the lines of Jews in America).

I've honestly hardly ever heard the two used in the same sentence. Only once by an overly simplistic peasant that eagerly campaigned for the success of the akali party.

The statement is just as accurate as Rajeev's back when he claimed that Surjeet Barnala is "very pro-militant" in 1986/7 so he could thank him for his good work for the Centre and post him to Tamil Nadu and thereby impose his own Indian National Congress President's rule over Panjaab.

Those on the ground would have a laugh if they heard that.

"Very Pro-Bania" more like. It would be a hundred times more accurate.

It's a sad indictment of the sheer gullibility, simplicity and hopelessness of our majority farming based community if they interpret the grant of free electricity to farmers as being "very pro-farmer".

Forget the haryana government for one second.

This guy Badal himself has been forcibly evicting farmers from their land in Panjaab in order to clear the way for his industrial friends and nuclear power plants to spread uranium poisoning among Panjaab's rural (Sikh) population!

If Badal was truly pro-farmer, he could have stuck two fingers up to his own prestigious seat as super tout/stooge, and instead, stuck by his declaration of Khalistan at the United Nations in 1993/5, that he made jointly with Mann Sahib, Talwandi, Tohra and Capt. Amrinder;

Thereby giving farmers the freedom to sell their own produce at prices set openly and fairly in the international market; instead of being dictated a price at 10% of the international level by the Indian Government and getting raped year on year like they do at the moment just because our so called "leader" in 1947 was an urban fella who couldn't give a flying f about our farmers and really just wanted to see the back of the muslims (fair enough, don't blame him for that bit) while gladly accepting his reward for ensuring the slavery of the Sikh Nation from his brahmin brothers in crime.

Khalistan would be a truly "pro-farmer" measure.

Unlike the petty sop that is free electricity (nobody pays their bills in india anyway, power is routinely stolen and the power cuts every five minutes anyway so it's not like free power makes any difference).
