Sikh Family Of 3 Attacked With Acid In Sonipat; Victims Include 7 Months Old Baby

Sonipat, India (October 06, 2013): It is learnt that a Sikh family of three have been attacked with an acid when they were sleeping inside their residence at Shiv colony on Devru road of Sonepat town in the wee hours of October 06.

According to the Hindustan Times (HT): [t]he victim identified as Baldev Singh,30, wife-Karamjit Kaur,27, and their seven month old daughter Khushpreet, who originally hail from Kaithal district sustained injuries into the incident. All were rushed to civil hospital, Sonepat, from where they were referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak. The condition of Karmjit Kaur is said to be critical.

As per details, Baldev, who works as submersible mechanic in Sonepat was sleeping with his wife and daughter on the first floot in a rented accommodation at the said place. Around, 3am, owner of house Sant Ram heard the cries of family members, who when rushed saw the acid spilled over their bodies and were crying in pain HT report reads further.

According to information the police patrolling near the said location rushed the victims to hospital.

According to Times of India (TOI) [a]ll the three have been rushed to PGIMS Rohtak. According to medical reports, Karamjit suffered 50% vision loss in addition to burn injuries on her face. Similarly, Baldev and Khushpreet too suffered burn injuries on their faces.

Police have reportedly started investigations after registering an attempt to murder case registered at city police station, against the unidentified assailants.

The police reportedly said that a case has been registered against unidentified persons. Notably, Supreme court had directed, the Union home ministry and states to impose a ban on across the counter sale of acid in the wake of rising incidents of attacks on women using the chemical.

A case has reportedly been registered against unknown persons under 323(voluntarily causing hurt), 326(voluntarily causing grievous hurt) sections of Indian Penal Code.

According to TOI: Investigations revealed that the assailant gained access to Baldevs room by climbing down from a tree standing near the house. Since, the main entrance of the house was locked, it was the only way to gain access to the house, police said.

DSP (headquarters) Sonepat, Satish Kumar, said that police are probing the motive behind the incident. Recently, Baldev had a spat with a co-mechanic. At the same time his wife also had an argument with a woman.

Investigations are in progress and we are hopeful of cracking the case at the earliest. Police parties have been dispatched to question the co-mechanic who, according to Baldev, might be the person behind the incident, the DSP said.

After two days of chase, the local police finally caught all accused involved in the acid attack on the Sikh family of three in Sonepat.

The accused identified as Darshan Singh, Gurjant Singh and Ranbir Singh, all residents of Kaithal district, were arrested late Monday night.

The family of three Baldev Singh, Karmjit Kaur and their seven-month-old daughter Khushpreet Kaur were attacked on Sunday morning when they were asleep.

As per police, Darshan Singh had one sided liking for Karmjit Kaur, which continued even after her marriage.

Darshan along with his two accomplices had been harassing Kaur to have an extra marital affair with him but Kaur kept denying following which he decided to commit the crime to take revenge on her.

The accused too was married and had children, but his possessiveness the for victim did not change with time.

Police further said that all accused had reached Sonepat on Saturday night and escaped in the dark immediately after committing the crime.

The accused were arrested based on the suspicion of Baldev Singh.

Meanwhile, doctors at Rohtak medical college, operating on Kaur said that chances of her regaining the eyesight were very bleak.
