WaheguruJiKaKhalsa!!WaheguruJiKiFateh!!

Hi All,

Just a quick question. A friend of a friend has turned into a 'Nihang' and I was told that he had to sacrifice a chicken as part of the initiation ceremony.

Is this normal???

Yes Bhenji , its normal initiation ceremony

Normal is what humans do to fit in, its mind conditioning.

One needs to ask themselves is killing an innocent life justifiable.

its just you thinking this way. please read the following book.

Taksal including nananksar/rara sahib/harkhowale is root primarily vaishanav/advait (nirmale) order which is primarily meant to promote bhagti, vidya/gyan.

Nihang is in root shakti order which is primarily meant to promote shakti -bhaugti with perception of life and death part of same coin, they invoke kaal- mahakaal relationship per sri dasam guru granth and everything is part of three gunas. They do jhatka to invoke shakti, and perception of whole creation being made out of gunas and khalsa meant to be above/de-attached from gunas.
So its understandable difference in maryada as Sikhi includes all - bhakti (vaishav), yogis-shabad surat, shakti (shakti-shakta), gyan (advait vedant) aspects all orginated from vahiguroo, maharaj has included all into one and only Khalsa.
There is diversity regarding jhatka as there is diversity of traditions (shakta-shakti,bhagti,gyan, shabad surat) within sikhism. It's never meant to be black and white way it was presented by singh sabha because multiple traditions/various school of thoughts -bhagti/shakti/gyan/shabad surat are all blended in khalsa beautifully and splendidly.
We are neither pacifistic satoguni sadhu(ahimsa type bhagat) nor we are tamoguni rakshash (sipahi). Maharaj has blended sant and sipahi balanced aspect spirit into image of his own- khalsa.

if you look into your daily life you are enough barbaric as we all are. whether eating meat or not

Life is about conscious creation of an experience of divine. I do agree we don't need to have a Jain type of living but, this type of chicken, goat killing business leads to extreme inhumane type of animal slaughter business. If Nihangs want to sharpen or keep their martial skills may be they need to do what US armed forces do for training their soldiers, take up virtual reality war or special mission video games.

I am afraid its not meant to be that simple. Nihang jhatka tradition has deeper aspects/meaning both internally and externally..outer (shastar pooja/shastar practicse, shastar bali) invoked by inner bir ras after recitation of sri dasam granth (chandi divar), sri sarbloh granth all pointing towards invoking aad shakti of kaal-mahakaaal vahiguroo.

With that being said, there is no hard or fast rule behind tradition nor its meant to taken as that- to define sant -sipahi but its a tradition/kriya which needs to kept alive just like there are some kriyas in yoga which invokes kinetic energy (chi energy-shiv shakti kundalini-yin yang) inside the body purpose to heal others physically, similarly jhakta tradition is kriya to invoke shakti of akaal purkh by reciting chandi divar with full concentration and physical bali is given as bhet (cocunut as alternative can be used ) to akaal purkh to invoke its shakti with purpose to dharam yudh or perserve martial spirit.

How is that different from Kosher or Halal, They are also doing it in the name of GOD.
