Hi, I have an opportunity to go to America for 2 weeks and visit an American University (Harvard, Massachusetts and Yale). However, I don't know if I should go. The stories I hear of Sikhs in America do put me off. I know it probably doesn't happen a lot, but it is a bit off putting. Has anyone been to these universities, or live near them? How is the area and are there Sikhs in the area?

You'll be fine. I am in Massachusetts for 5 years plus now and never had any problems. Plus the Sikh community here is pretty neat. Once at a cafeteria I had a cop tell me "I've never come across a Sikh arrested for drunk driving or domestic abuse". Following the Wisconsin incident, we received much strong solidarity from ALL faith groups, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, you name it. In fact, the biggest and oldest church in downtown Boston invited us, and we had a huge divaan right in the church! We didn't have any serious issues even after the Boston blasts of April 2013.

We have 4 Gurdwaras already in the entire state and the 5th one is being built as I type.

Welcome in advance and hope you like snow! :D :p

Racism still exists in America. But don't worry, you are going to visit prestigious universities where educated people go to.

They will treat you well. If however, you feel discriminated you must contact United Sikhs and they will take care of the situation

There are gurdwaras which are about an hour away form Yale in CT

  • Connecticut Sikh Association 1610, West St Southington CT 06489 Ph 860-621-3015
  • Sikh Cultural Society of Central New England 39, Forest Hills Dr, Farmington CT 06032 Ph 203-677-9430
  • Guru Harkrishan Ashram 41, Thomson Rd, Hartford CT 06107 Ph 860-521-0517
  • Guru Ram Das Ashram 679, Ridge Rd, Middletown CT 06457 Ph 860-346-2311

Gurdwaras in MA which are about hour and a half away from Harvard

  • Guru Ram Das Gurdwara Sahib 368, Village St, Millis, MA 02054 Ph 508-376-2804
  • Milford Gurdwara 204, East Main St, Milford, MA 01757 Ph 508-478-2469

Hope this helps

Ok the Medford Gurdwara is 3.1 miles from Harvard. The Everett one is 3.8 miles. The Millis one is 30.6 miles and the Milford one is 37.9 miles.

No you won't be bugged. The Gurdwaras offer free food to homeless people around Thanksgiving which is next week. I am sure all robbers and muggers know who NOT to harass! :D
