Akal Takhat Issues Aadesh Regarding Gurdwara Committees

By: Sikh24 Editors

AMRITSAR SAHIB (November 27, 2013)—In a decision taken at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, it was decided that only practicing Sikhs should be allowed to be members of Gurdwara committees. The decision was taken after Sri Akal Takhat Sahib had received numerous complaints about non-practicing Sikhs carrying out anti-Gurmat activities within Gurdwara premises. Many times, these persons are on the Gurdwara committees and do as they please.

This is only a very basic step and barely even begins to address the issue of non-Sikhs/nastiks taking over our Gurdwaras. We need a strong Akaal Takhat Jathedar that does not even have a slight grey spot on his honesty and integrity.

We lack proper leadership, once we get that, all these problems will be fixed. Give the people a false leader and make the false leader speak like a leader and you set a people at bay for an indefinite period of time. A good way to pacify a people and give an illusion of something is being accomplished.

Just my .02 cents.

i doubt even if we had the best Akal Takht leader things would change in teh Gurdwaras abroad or in Punjab. What 's needed is a panel of sevadaars

representing the akal takht and ensuring the Gurdwaras are monitored and ensure they follow maryada - just like during singh sabha lehar time there was a gurdwara sudaar lehar which ensured Gurdwaras and the main people in the committes followed protocol- till we have that we are nowhere, apologies no offence intended just my 2 cents

Such panels won't work, no way to implement them. Only rule of law does and this is a matter of dharam, what's right and wrong. Instead of debating semantics, I hope we can be objective and agree there is no way to physically implement Sri Akaal Takhat Hukamanam "jivein Punjab vich hosagda".

A respectable Sri Akaal Takhat Jathedar that the Panth can unite under will automatically elect better committee members. We have no unity, everyone's busy pushing their own agenda(s).

No need to say "no offense" bro if you don't mean it. :)

So now the stance has changed?

What is defined as practising? Those Sikhs who practise upto their ability and personal affection, or is it somneone is amritdfhari, or is it someone who is repeating naam 24 hours a day?

What about those sikhs who we would generally call practising sikhs, because they are amritdhari, who insist on party halls as part of the gurdwara? God knows ive had my fair share of arguments with them.

Why is it that only non-practising sikhs are singled out for anti-gurmat activities in the gurdwara? dont amritdharis swear in the gurdwara? or look down on others? or gossip or slander? or park their cars in the disabled bay just so they dont have to walk an extra 20 meters?

what about amritdhari sikhs doing as they please in the gurdwaras? saying what they like, discriminating against certain people? is this in line with gurmat?

I think that some serious thinking needs to be done in this situation.

As non-profit organizations with charitable designations they are legally bound to comply with the corporations act of whatever country these gurdwaras are located. During the time of election they cannot deny any individual who is not 'amritdhari' from running for a position on the board/committee. The same goes for individuals who currently sit on these boards as they cannot be removed simply due to their apparent lack of religious conviction. IF an election takes place and it just so happens that every elected candidate is amritdhari then so be it, but the same opportunity to run and contribute to the organization must be given to all those who decide to do so. Violations may lead to law suits on the grounds of human rights violations, going against the corporations act of their respective countries and penalties which may extend to loss of charitable or non-profit designations. Religious edicts do not trump civil law.

Not much thought process goes into your post and it really shows. Before you continue with anything further find out what Amritdhari and Sehajdhari mean. Then come back to tell everyone what you have learned.

Trying to scare Sikhs sangat with fable legal jargon? Not going to work because this is about suitability and qualification according to Sikh religion principles. Just as IBM or another corporation will not hire a board that don't have a clue about business management neither will the Sikh religion allow such unqualified people abuse non-profit organizations run under the Sikh religion. Apply your feeble statements to the Constitution of common law countries. Why don't Mona put on a Kirpan and try to claim they are allowed to wear the Kirpan in public according to the Constitution given freedoms and rights? Yet an amritdhari can walk into a certain countries court house and Parliament with a Kirpan and they have the full right?

Before you come to play hardball get a pair at least.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
