Monty Panesar was the victim of an alleged racial gaffe which led to Cricket Australia sacking the ground announcer midway during England's game with the Chairman's XI in Alice Springs.

Traeger Park ground announcer David Nixon, an ABC employee, was given his marching orders by CA shortly before lunch on Saturday after introducing Panesar, who is a Sikh, in an Indian accent.

"Cricket Australia deemed the conduct of the PA announcer as inappropriate and as such he will take no further part in the match," said a CA spokesperson.

It is understood England officials played no part in Nixon's removal nor is Panesar believed to have heard the comment.

"It was something we weren't aware of to be honest, we didn't know anything about that," said England's captain for the game Ian Bell.

Nixon told Fairfax Media: "There's too much riding in the town on the success of this game to make this an issue about me."

Nixon's style had raised eyebrows on Friday when he gently mocked Joe Root, who later spent periods off the field with an upset stomach, for calling a drink while batting in the heat.

He was also cheeky with the home side, calling Michael Beer into the attack by saying "We're going to have Beer before lunch".

Ironically, one of the PA's jobs during the game is to remind spectators of the ICC's anti-racism code which warns fans that "racially abusive comments and actions will result in ejection from the ground" and other sanctions.
