Agenda 21 Wins Approval For Barking Sikh Temple

Recommended Posts

LONDON-Agenda 21 Architects Studio has secured planning permission for a Sikh temple in Barking. The 3,155sq m temple, known as a gurdwara, will be clad with white stone and feature carvings, cornices and balustrades created by specialist Indian craftsmen.

Golden bronze cladding panels will be used to finish the top tier of the main building in reference to the Gold Temple in Amritsar.

A 420sq m dining hall will be the largest space within the new building and will serve free vegetarian meals to visitors throughout the day.

Other rooms will be used as congregation halls, classrooms and residential areas for visiting priests and musicians.

Agenda 21 described the proposed temple as "resolutely traditional at first glance but designed with a strong modern ethos regarding proportions, typology and functional layouts leading to an editing of the traditional features".

The new temple will adjoin the listed 19th century Quaker Friends House which was converted into East London's first Sikh temple in 1973.

As someone who lives not too far from the Gurdwara Sahib, I have to say what an absolute waste of money.

This gurdwara hardly has a huge amount of sangat, half the time the place is empty- more sangat goes to seven kings (the partner gurdwara of this one). Either way the buildings for both gurdware serve the purpose fine.

Rather than this why don't they focus on actually doing some decent programs. If anything spend some money on getting us a decent car park!!

If there ever is an actual good program most people have to spend half of it looking for a space before they decide to go home lol.

While families of shaheed singhs are dying in Punjab, how can we justify spending god knows how much on unnecessary building developments?

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Waheguru ji ki fateh

Gurdwara Committee's members are primarily property managers so what to expect.

If you want to do Gurmat prachaar then feed the poor, give them clothes & provide shelter.

Daya is foremost virtue of Khalsa.

As per Gurbani

Moreso if you want Waheguru's grace then give care to Needy.

That's the reason why Karamsar attracts more Sangat compared to SevenKings or Barking.

If parking is a problem, hire Valet Service on special events or volunteer.

I was told a decade back that Committee was interested in acquiring Homebase at 7kings, don't know what happened.

Lastly you don't need buildings to do Prachaar.

It can be done through Internet, Tv & Mobile.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

I visited Both Singh Sabha London East and Karamsar in that Era.

My take ( correct me if im wrong) combined factors kicked in

As Sangats were branching outwards from Newham settling across Redbridge it was more convenient then for locals than going back to Neville Rd. Singh Sabha London East Sangat at Barking were attending Karamsar in bigger numbers as the progs and kathaa appealed to them. At the time Barking Committee had little going on. When anything was suggested it fell on deaf ears.

Barking should spend money wisely, invest in Youth, renovate with minimal... The atmosphere in a Gurdwara is best when its simple just look at Old Havelock. That feeling of love ekta seva warmth preservation of portraits. Once the Old building fell for the MultiMillion Pound one it may still have numbers but the feeling is now very different. Lots of folk have fond memories from the Old building. I met Bhai Rama Singh there first time.

More money making schemes and construction work for jobless builders rather than money helping get the youth involved in gurdwara life and sikhi parchar.

I bet these peoples daughters and sisters and pubbing and clubbing and sleeping around with all sorts. Because you know one thing...those so called Sikhs who do not concentrate their energies on doing Sikhi parchar and catering to the needs of the youth within Sikhism are the ones who often pay for it with their family's reputation, standing and izzat destroyed in front of the whole community.

Guys you shouldn't depend on Committee's for doing Seva or Prachaar.

Just be a Gursikh (word & deed) that in itself is best prachaar.

During my stay in London, it came to my notice that born & bred brits hardly help in daily Seva.

Hoover, mopping, dish wasing, preparing langar and other daily chores were done by people of Indian origin.

There is no Shabad Chownki at the time of Sukhaasan where Sikhs can come together and sing Shabads out of love not for fame or money.

Gurbani clearly states that

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਗਲੀਈ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Giaan N Galeeee Dtoodteeai Kathhanaa Kararraa Saar ||

गिआनु न गलीई ढूढीऐ कथना करड़ा सारु ॥

Wisdom cannot be found through mere words. To explain it is as hard as iron.

So what Seva & Prachaar are we talking about !

Lastly if you feel no compassion for lowly & needy in your local community then you should gear up for another London riot & looting.

    • The Indian media would have to spin that to an incredible degree, to make it seem as if Modi has a plan that ultimately benefits India even when dealing with a geopolitical adversary such as China, especially since what happened between the two sides a few months ago as well as the ongoing propaganda war between the two.
    • Hey everyone, I'm new to this site and this is my first post. I recently got into Sikhi and for the last 4 months, I have been so into reading history and prayer as well. What I don't understand is different websites. Panj bani paath is what I don't understand. Are the five...3 in morning 1 evening 1 at night. Or is there 5 in the morning and then 1 in evening and 1 at night. 2 or 3 websites contradict each other. Which ones do we have to read. I'm so confused. Please don't laugh or judge me.    What are the 5 and when do you do them?    Some say 3 in morning and some say 5. Is 5 all in morning or are the 5 altogether in total throughout the day?  Is it: Japji sahib, Jaap sahib, tav-prasad savaiye in morning and then rehras and kirtan sohila (are these the 5?)    Or is it:   Japji sahib, Jaap sahib, tav-prasad savaiye AND chaupai sahib and anand sahib in morning (are these the 5?) And then rehras and kirtan sohila in the evening time.      Thank you
    • Privatisation can also mean foreign players can come onto the scene.  China is buying swathes of land in Africa and elsewhere to grow food, they could do the same in India. New Zealand bulk of agriculture goes to China. What if these companies decide to sell food produced to China for higher prices and not to local market?
    • Do you know what other system other than MSP is present. I can see this game played by opening up the market to private corporations. You see the same scam played with privatisation of other sectors. It looks like that you open up the market and seems to be "free" market. What will happen is small operators get swallowed up and eventually gets controlled by a few big players.  You get less players and less competition. The smaller players will close their farms and you end up mass industrial farms with bonded labourers.  It is going back to a feudal system by another name. You have Mr Ambani with his Reliance retail stores. He will squeeze the all suppliers like Tesco does in the UK. Those farmers will be forced to sell their land to him.  He will control the production of food and the sale of it to the public.  If him and his cronies start to control the price, they will push all those small retail stores that sell food and they will be put out of business.  He and his ilk will control everything.  That cannot be allowed to happen.
    • I did see an interveiw with a Hindu lady at these talks who said that she represented a farmers organisation from Maharashtra and Gujarat ans she said that her members were being told by police not to make their way to Delhi otherwise they would face legal action. The police have also been guarding the most points out of the villages to check any attempt by farmers to come to Delhi. The reason that it looks like just farmers from Punjab and Haryana is because these states provide the most agricultural produce through the MSP. So they are one that stand to lose the most if MSP is scrapped after the private corporations enter the market.
