Guess who just spoke!

Amid the raging row over claims that Margaret Thatcher's government had aided India in the Operation Bluestar to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in 1984, Lt Gen (Retd) KS Brar, who led the offensive, on Tuesday said it was planned and executed by Indian military commanders.

"I am quite dumbfounded because the operation was planned and executed by military commanders in India. There is no question...we never saw anyone from UK coming in here and telling us how to plan the operation," Brar told a TV news channel.

Maintaining that there was no involvement of British agencies in the operation that left over 1000 dead and led to revenge assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he said the authenticity of the documents that have surfaced suggesting England's assistance should be checked.

"I am not a politician. I don't know what are the political motives of these letters coming out. I am a straightforward soldier and therefore cannot give any view besides the soldier's view.

"I conducted the operation and no aid came in. This is the first time I am hearing all this. It is obviously some mischief at some stage or the other. There was no aid given to us, no advice given to us, there was no representative from the UK government who came and met us to help us plan the operation," the 79-year-old former general said.

A controversy has broken out after a British MP claimed he had seen declassified documents suggesting Britain's Special Air Service (SAS) officials had been dispatched to help India plan the military offensive at the Golden Temple to flush out the militants.

Labour MP Tom Watson and Lord Indarjit Singh had demanded an explanation from British government on Monday after the documents, declassified under Britain's 30-year rule, said Thatcher had authorised SAS to collude with Indian government to plan the operation.

There was a murderous attack on Brar by a group of Sikhs in London in 2012.

Three Sikh men and a woman were last year convicted of carrying out the revenge attack on Brar and sentenced to undergo imprisonment from 10 and half years to 14 years by a British court.

Lol. Indian Military most probably feared the Singhs and knew they could not handle it on their own which is why they needed international assistance (including USSR's KGB) which they received. Brar's is obviously a face-saving statement.

Indian Military was not scared. They had high powered weapons and they were just waiting for political backing from a super power like UK so there is no political backlash from other countries after the attack. The Indian Military could have completely demolished all of Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht in the first 5 hours if it was not for political backing that was preventing them from doing it. This was well planned and thought out attack. Draw out the attack into days so allies won't think you are the next hitler with no regard for women or children or a whole religion.

The Indian Military leaders had no regard for women and children and men. What makes you think it had any regard for the soldiers it lost in the attack? The Indian Military gained the soldiers back in no time with new recruits.

The Singhs fighting had huge hearts to face such terror and wreckless government, with no regard for human life or religious structures.

David Cameron never misses any opportunity to win votes. I'm sure the conservatives knew all along about Britsins stance in 1984 hence their silence about this matter. He''s the one who refused to apologise about jalia Walachia bhag. Pit would be foolish to think we're going to get justice from this government 30 years on

What I dont understand is why would Margaret thatcher a supposed leader of a nation (United Kingdom) at cold war with the USSR soviet communists at the time ...give SAS advisory / military help to a nation like India who is allied with their foe? While the American CIA who are strongly allied with British military and Intelligence was busy aiding all groups it could master against USSR plans and networks.

The KGB had a strong military and political presence with indira gandhi and her govt. Some Indian analysts say induced the attack of operation blue star against sant bhindranwale for his policies that not in favor of communist ideology. So what I dont understand is why a western British prime minister would have given any support to (India) nation that was in bed with their ideological enemy (soviet communists).

I can only think of covert British establishment racism and tacit genocidal support against the Sikhs of India and their political aspirations of independence.

Margaret Thatcher's Real Soul Mate Was Indira Gandhi

by Bruce Riedel

17.04.2013

They fought wars, thrived in a male-dominated political world, and faced controversy at home. Bruce Riedel on the kinship between Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi.

Americans are making much of the partnership between President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher following her death last week, but the baroness's real soul mate was another Iron Lady, Prime Minister Indira Nehru Gandhi.

The two prime ministers were both polarizing figures in their own countries who left behind very controversial legacies. They first meet in September 1976 when Thatcher visited India as head of the Conservative Party. Two months earlier Gandhi had declared a state of emergency in India, suspending freedom of the press and imprisoning dozens of her political enemies. Thatcher was supportive and made no public criticism of the emergency. As one of Thatcher’s biographers later wrote, the two had from the beginning a “uniquely easy relationship.” Gandhi’s biographer wrote that “Indira and Thatcher were aberrations in the predominately male world of politics” and “their loneliness as women leaders led them to form a bond.”

Gandhi lost her next reelection bid and went into the political wilderness for a time. She visited London in November 1978 and Thatcher urged her not to give up politics and to run again. Gandhi ran for reelection again in January 1980 and won a clear majority in parliament. Her “private visit” to the U.K. was credited with refurbishing her international reputation and stature at home.

In November 1983 Gandhi hosted Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth at a Commonwealth Summit in New Delhi. It was a triumph for both and a demonstration of their skills at the ballot box.

The two had many things in common but perhaps the most important was their success as military leaders. Margaret Thatcher of course prevailed over Argentina in the Falklands war. Despite lukewarm support from Reagan and against formidable logistical odds, the Royal Navy carried an expeditionary force from one end of the Atlantic Ocean to another and defeated the Argentines.

Gandhi prevailed over Pakistan in the 1971 war that led to Bangladesh’s freedom. She prevailed in spite of the opposition of the United States. President Richard Nixon actively urged Iran and China to come to Pakistan’s help and sent an American carrier battle group into the Bay of Bengal to intimidate Gandhi. She was not frightened by gun boat diplomacy, and in December 1971 more than 90,000 Pakistani troops surrendered to Gandhi’s generals in Dhaka, the darkest day in the history of the Pakistani army. The two demonstrated that women can be tough leaders in wartime and defeat tin-pot dictators.

On October 11, 1984, Thatcher was the target of an assassination attempt by the Irish Republican Army that blew up the hotel that the Conservative Party was using for its annual conference in Brighton. Five died in the attack. Gandhi called Thatcher almost immediately to send her best wishes and counsel resolve. Twenty days later, Gandhi was shot to death by her own Sikh bodyguards in New Delhi. She died in the arms of her daughter-in-law, Sonia Gandhi. Vice President George Bush came to the funeral as did many world leaders including Yassir Arafat and Zia ul Huq, but the star attraction was the British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, paying her respects as one Iron Lady to another.

Joyce Pettigrew explains:

"The Army went into Darbar Sahib not to eliminate a political figure or a political movement but to suppress the culture of a people, to attack their heart, to strike a blow at their spirit and self-confidence."
