The Sikh Defenders not only faced the entire Indian establishment with its enormous military and intelligence resources but also the Congress, BJP/RSS, Corrupt Akalis, Nirankaris, various sects with their self styled Gurus, Santa Singh and some of the Buddha Dal and Foreign Govt resources also. The Singhs were the bravest of the brave. The Panth salutes them.

Not only that they faced the combined might of an international enemy with the guidance of the worlds special forces

If we get the full disclosure of the documents, because there was a collusion of intelligence, we may get the following answers as well

- How many and which Indian army personnel were used during the operation and how many Singhs fought

- What military equipments (including helicopters) were used by the army and what were used by the Singhs

- How much Sangat was inside the complex during attack and how many were allowed to leave.

- How many casualties of the Sangat and how many wounded

- What happened to the bodies of the deceased and whether they were indeed mass-cremated just outside the complex

- Any mistreatment by the Indian army on the Sangat

- How many army personnel died and wounded

- What happened to the Sikh reference library literature and if it still exists somewhere

-Why were the tanks involved if the number of casualties on the army side was very low (official figure 82)

British support for the attack on the Golden Temple at Amritsar, India

Responsible department: Foreign and Commonwealth Office

The government has recently published documents under the 30 year rule that suggest the Foreign Office authorised military planning advice to the government of India in regard to the raid on the Golden Temple at Amritsar during 1984.

We would like the government to make a statement in the House of Commons as to how and why the secret decision was taken and what military support was given to India; publish all documents relating to this matter and consider an official apology to the Sikh community.

I don't know why, but I feel Gen Sinha should be among the representatives among Sikhs to investigate from our side.

Good point. He can relay the truth behind the scenes during army pre-army planning but not what really happened just before, during and after the operation since he was not part of the operation.

But he may have had discussions with other Army generals who took part in the operation but not sure he will be willing to share that without their consent...

That this House notes with concern the evidence now available as a result of the most recent release of Foreign and Commonwealth Office documents which reveal that in 1984 the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and Foreign Secretary, Geoffrey Howe, agreed that the UK would provide military assistance in the form of SAS advice in planning the assault by Indian forces on the Sikh's Golden Temple at Amritsar which resulted in a large number of deaths and the desecration of this holy place; further notes that the authorisation of this military assistance was kept secret; and calls on the Government to establish an independent public inquiry into the collusion between the UK and Indian governments on the perpetration of this massacre, including the immediate release of UK Government documents relating to it.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

January 21st, 2014 | Tom Watson MP

The response of the Cabinet Secretary is below.

I’ve spoken to him today. He was very clear that he thinks the “cat is out of the bag” and that his report will be presented to the PM shortly.

He told me that whilst there is a long standing tradition that the documents of the intelligence services remain private and secret, ministers will have the right to authorise all suppressed departmental papers.

Whilst it is not a civil service decision whether the government gives a statement to the House of Commons, he suggested that if there was the political will, there would be one on this issue. It is likely that the Foreign Secretary would lead on this.
