Sikhs Should Have 4 Kids

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab (March 17, 2014): In a move that would surprise many, Giani Gurbachan Singh, the jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib appealed to Sikh couples to have four children.

Giani Gurbachan Singh was speaking to media persons at Anandpur Sahib on March 17, 2013.

The Akal Takht Jathedar said that the previous governments had given a slogan ‘hum do hamare do’ to the people of the country which was followed by Sikhs.

He said that as a result of the above call and policy of the government, the number of Sikhs has gone down heavily and it making an adverse impact on the progress of Sikh community, the state and the country.

The Jathedar told media persons that the number of Sikhs was very high at the time of Guru Nanak Sahib which has been going down regularly.

He said that it was time to shun the slogan ‘hum do hamare do’ and adopt the slogan ‘hum do hamare chaar’.

The Jathedar said that the above approach was in the benefit of the Sikh community. He said that it would take the ‘Qaum’ ahead in Religion, Politics and would also be good for the future of the Sikh families, the community, the state and the country.

I agree, but there should be more emphasis on Sikhs not to kill female foetus's as well.

Plus you have to actually raise them as Sikhs, no point in having four kids if you dont teach them anything about Gurmat and the Panth.

Need strong institution and social structure backbone for a strong current Sikh population which is lacking.

good advise by the Akal Takht. He should have also talked about female infanticide since so many children are being murdered in the womb by their own mothers and fathers. The impotent and barren way of thinking of today's Sikhs is really sad. They see their own children as a burden, especially the girl child. And for a nationless people like the Sikh community which is a small minority as it is, they need to have a positive birth rate of at least 3 children in order to have a healthy demographic growth. Anything less than that will not grow the community and we might very well end up like the dwindling Parsi community.

I don't agree with this Singh sahib statement because this does not solve problem. It should be parchar that needs to be done on mass scale - not for non-Sikhs but for Sikhs to stay firm in sikhi.

Population is always on rise but declining attendence is not because Sikhs are not having enough children but a BIG SIGN that future young sikh couples are not following sikhi because of lack of approach by parchar management.

That's the attitude that will ensure that Sikhs end up like the Parsis. Population is not always on the rise, it depends on the number of kids couples have. Couples need on average 2.1 kids in order to ensure a growth in the population, anything below and the population decreases. Russia and many western countries are in negative population growth for years. Putin has had to invite back Russians from the former soviet republics using incentives in order to keep the population stable.

The edict is long overdue and should have been issued after the 2001 census which showed that the Sikh population of Punjab had gone down from 62.95% to 59.95%. It is coming 15 years too late and the figures for the 2011 census will show how much damage has been done because the Sikh leadership has not discharged its duty and been asleep to this problem for the last 15 years.
